csi5 connection

Hi, I just replaced my center speaker with CSi5 courtesy of Screename. My question is: Can I use my onk 282 power amp to drive the CSi5 and if so, how do I connect it since there is L & R on the 282 and only two binding post ( + & -) on the CSi5. I am no longer using the 282 to power my RTi10 cuz I replaced it with parasound HCA 1500A. I have not listened to it yet since the components just arrived recently and I just wondering if the 282 would work with my new center. Thanks for any info.

The Onkyo 282 amplifier is a 2 channel amp. It is typically used for the left and right front channels. However you are not limited to that. If you connect your center channel from your Yamaha to the Onk's right channel and then from your Onk's right output to the CSi5, it should work fine.

Just curious! Will the CSi5 get more power from the onk 282 which is 100 wpc or from my yammie rxv1400 which is 110 wpc. pls advz/ Thanks.

You have to be careful when looking at the Watts per Channel ratings of receivers. Most companies attempt to mislead their customers into thinking that you are purchasing a high power receiver when in fact it has very little power. For example, you may see a rating of:

20Hz to 20Khz, 0.04% THD, 8ohms - 110watt <--- page 85 of your receivers manual

If you notice, it does not say how many speakers are being driven during this rating. For most commercial receivers this actually means that you can drive one speaker at a time up to 110watts. If you drive all 7 speakers at the same time, your receiver drops down to 110/7 = 15 Watts (total estimate since some speakers will require more power at a given time than others).

Now lets look at your Onkyo 282 amp. It states:

100watts at 8 ohms with both channels driven <--- page 7 of the Onkyo amp manual

You see the difference? The amp will deliver 100watts to each channel no matter if both are driven or not. Your Yamaha will deliver 110watts to 15 watts according to how many speakers your are trying to drive.

With the equipment you have listed, I would use the Parasound for the fronts, the Onkyo for the surrounds, and the Yamaha to drive the center channel.

With the Yamaha driving the center ONLY, it will give it 110 watts. If I recall the Yamaha's are rated with 2 channels driven.

This should give you the max available power to each speaker with that setup.

I will definitely give this a shot too and try to see which one sounds better. I will post after I decide which setup I will use. Again, thank you so much for without this forum, I would still be an unsatisfied listener.
