Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

Comes out tomorrow on DVD, and I will be picking this up. I haven't seen the movie yet, so it will be a blind buy. Based on the reviews (which never mean much) it seems that this is another 'battle of the purists'. I have a feeling I'll enjoy the movie just based on that being the big argument people are having. Depp & Burton have earned my respect as actor & director enough to give this one a shot.

Who else is getting this one, and if you saw it, what did you think?

(Also assuming it will be a good time to pick up the old 1971 'version', even though I hear this isn't exactly a remake.)

I've read a couple good reviews and I'm keeping my fingers crossed. Johnny Depp is a blast to watch and Tim Burton has quite an imagination like when he did Nightmare Before Christmas.

This is a MUST...even for Depp and Burton haters. The opening scene where they go in the factory is possibly worth the 20 bucks... just freakin great. I love it...

I still remember the old movie when the public met what's his name at the gate to begin the tour. He was walking slowly with a limp & cane then he did a tumble and hopped right up

...yeah, and that's because only 30 seconds of material is presented at a time. the other times are all like 10 min commercial breaks!

I was expecting much better PQ then what this disc provided. Lots of EE, a soft image and some washed out blacks and noise too boot. After coming off Star Wars, Elektra DC, Kingdom of Heaven and such this was a big let down in the image catagory. I just don't get it, this should have had a beautiful transfer.

I thought it was just me Ron. This DVD looked horrible on my set also. VERY soft and tons of noise. What happened?
Other than that I really liked this movie and I thought Danny Elfman did a great job with the Oompa Loompa songs. I read some reviews that you could not really feel the vulnerability with Depp's Wonka. Gene Wilder's was weird, mean and crazy...but not really. Depp's left me feeling 'O.K. he's just crazy'. There was one very subtle tender moment from him in the elevator but that was really it.
Overall I would give it a 6 or 7. Compared to the first....maybe a 5 or so.

I enjoyed the movie much more than I thought I would. I agree the picture quality is substandard and it is a bad transfer. The audio was pretty good. I would recommend it.

Just finally watched this.

Definitely enjoyed it. The visuals were amazing (I don't have a nice enough TV to really notice PQ at this point... ), as was expected from a Burton film. He's always worth the price of admission. Johnny Depp REALLY creeped me out. I don't quite know if I agree with him portraying Wonka as what seemed to me to be a stoned Valley Girl half the time, but it was definitely eccentric :)

However, I couldn't help comparing against the original movie. No one can compare to Gene Wilder, of course (and I like Johnny Depp... at least as an actor). Despite how cheesy all teh songs are in teh original, I did miss some of them.

I guess I'm the odd man out. I watched it last night with the family and we were all very disappointed. Perhaps it has because none of us has read the book or because we enjoyed watching the original movie so much. Depp's acting was wooden and he came across as a sociopath. The ompaloompa's (sp?) were terrible, and the disco-ish music didn't help at all. Danny Elfman did a good job on the score but the musical numbers were bizzare to saythe least. Grandpa Joe was disappointing after the first few scenes, it seems as though he wasn't even there.

Okay as a $.99 rental, but that's about it.

Just got around to watching this one last night. Good rental but not a buy. I own the original movie. Like Frank said....the musical numbers just sucked. Dep makes a better pirate. I'd take Wilder any time for this part. I may watch it again before I return it...maybe not.

I know this is an old post but we just got around to renting it. I can say without reservation that this is the worst movie ever made. How this garbage ever made it to a theater is a mystery. It was totally void of anything. I watched the whole thing without any reaction. The original was great. Depp is a great actor so I am surprized he even took the role. I felt as though it was directed by George Lucas, he is the only one to take a great movie phenomenon and remake it into total crap 20 years later.
Jar Jar Binks and the Chocolet Factory should have been the title. Meesa wants some candy.

I thought it was a good flick.
Like most of hollwood I have to let myself believe that things are able to happen the way they do or I will not enjoy the movie.
I think Depp is perfect for this type of roll and he acted like a kid who grew up without any parental guidance. He just says what he wants and does what he wants.

I will say that our family watched the original the next night and we liked the original better.

Kids loved it. I thought it more than a bit borish and contrived. It has it's "adult moments", and I did enjoy the revelation regarding Willy Wankers chocolate jones and arrested development.
