YOU'RE THE MAN! I have always been told that Clapton's unplugged album was never pressed to vinyl, but sure enough they have some Brazilian pressing. Now if I can just bring myself to spend $54. :eek:

Audiophile recordings are nice. They tend to sound better than the average stuff. I got my first japan pressing a few months ago "Fleetwood Mac Mirage" and there is a big difference between it and the original I bought when it came out. Of course out of maybe 2K albums I only have maybe 30 or 40 audiophile recordings.

Here lately I've been finding all sorts of mint vinyl for around $0.75 each. Sure makes it hard to buy one audiophile version compared to 70 non-audiophile versions. :)

What makes an LP an audiophile pressing? Anything from Japan? Mobile Fidelity and other labels? Quiex vinyl? Anything on 180g or 200g vinyl? Half speed mastering? Others?

Pretty much. At least that is my definition. Add to that 45RPM and Direct to Disc. There are also some standard releases which have the same sound quality and I would include them.

I think you should say full album release on 45RPM, instead of just 45RPM... 'cause I've heard a lot of bad 45's. BTW- has anyone seen the Cowboy Junkie's trinity session on 45's? I heard that it had been pressed, but haven't ever seen it.

Yea, I guess I should have. I didn't mean the 7" thingys. Actually, full album release doesn't cut it either. Some are a single song on each side and most recently the 45RPM cuts from CCR only has a few songs from each LP on each side.

agreed that vinyl sounds better its just i wouldnt pay £250
you could get :
over 16 cd albums
over 16 new vinyl
over 13 dvds
a 28" tv

I agree with ya. I would never spend that much for a regular album.

But on the other hand I would consider spending $50 for a favorite album that is not available on lp anywhere else.

Like a lot of collectable items, certain LP's are highly valued by collectors and they are willing to spend large amounts even if they will never even listen to an LP. For example, certain Mobile Fidelity Sound Labs (MFSL) LP's that are of limited number will bring $500 or more on Ebay simply because they are rare and not being made anymore. Some people collect the MFSL label and will spend hundreds of dollars on some titles.

Interestingly, the most I've paid for an LP is $40 while I've spent $50 on an out of print CD. :o

Hey Bob,
There is a lot of TT stuff out there today that no one would have considered 10 years ago. It's expensive though. You should at least put together something to play them on though. This is a whole new area where you can obtain better sound than CD's if you work at it and get a little lucky. :)

I can't believe I just came across this thread. I buy audiophile pressings all the time. The most I'll spend is $100 on let's say a Classic Records 200gm pressing of Led Zepplin's Physical Graffiti. I'll pay $100 for a double LP set and $50 for an LP audiophile pressing.

I recently got a Japenese Universal Records 200 gram pressing of Gaucho from Acoustic Sounds. It is an excellent pressing with beautiful artwork (unlike that recent MFSL Rush - Permanent Waves cover) and wonderful sound quality. I’d like to get more of the UR releases but they are $40 each.

The last email from Acoustic Sounds said Speakers Corner, Pure Pleasure and Japanese Universal Records LPs will go up in price beginning February 15, 2008. The Japanese Universal Records will go up another $10 for a single.

DMM. I'm surprised no one has ever mentioned records made using the DMM method.
They sound better than regular vinyl. I found out about them during my quest for sound back in 1987.
