Best receiver....

Hello everyone. I may be posting in the wrong area, but just need some advice. I just purchased the polk rm-6005 speaker package to replace my huge floor speakers and am happy with them for the most part. I have a yamaha rxv595 receiver that i love, but may not be the best match. I am looking to upgrade to 6.1 receiver if it makes a noticable difference? Advice? And what is the best receiver option in the 400 dollar price range (if there is an option)? Thanks very much and appreciate any advice.

At your price point no sonic difference, save your dough, stick with the Yammie unless you want some new bells and whistles features it does not have.

I respectfully disagree with reel. There is a sonic difference at that pricepoint between various receivers. HTrookie gave you a great starting point.

I'm gonna agree with you both. There are sonic differences, but it's hard to say one is better at that pricepoint- each one has it's own colorations and depending on your ear some will be more/less pleasing to you.

I really appreciate everyone's advice. I am a newbie to the audiophile fix - I started out with the receiver when it first came out and spent 500 dollars for it (almost seven or eight years ago). I listen to a lot of music and watch a ton of movies and football on sundays. The polks sound great, but lack the "boom" that I got with my cerwin vega d5's and infinity studio monitors. Those became too big and with a toddler learning to walk I was afraid that she would pull them over and hurt herself. I was just wondering whether or not it would be worth it to upgrade to 6.1 and get a new receiver. Thaks again for the input and I look forward to anyone else's opinions.

yes, Unc. agreed, they might sound different but not better or worse so why waste the dough unless he wants more channels or something. Athough all the mass market entry level Asian receivers have a bright to some, harsh to others sound to them. Not suprising since all the Asian piano's like Yamaha, Wang, Akai, are also bright compared to say a Steinway. Entry level is just that. Its just they way it is. ie non-discreet circuity, cheap caps, power supply, everthing in one box, heat, yada yada the science guru's can explain it I just hear it.

Andrew and HT well its OK to disagree and I dont mean to rip or dis ya, everbody has budget or like in this case safety concerns but there is a whole world of audio levels, your next level, oh say Rotel, NAD, Outlaw, then maybe B&K, Sunfire, Parasound, its gets mixed at the mid level gear but these are definetly seperated from the pack. Some of these are now even from the far east but just better.

Then speaking of Seperates :D

What I meant by sonic difference was not quality, but for the type of sound the listener prefers. Bright, Warm, Scrambled, Over-Easy, etc..

I would stay 5.1 or upgrade to 7.1. I'm just not sure about 6.1's future. I think the industry will skip 6.1 and record movies in 7.1 down the road, making 7.1 the mainstream like 5.1 is now.

There are plenty of choices in that price range. Either look for one that has all the features you want and sounds the best to you. Or if it is more boom you want, look into getting a new sub.
