Improving SQ on a TV

Was wondering if anyone ever experimented with improving the SQ on a television. Most of them sound terrible. Anyone ever replace their TV's speakers with higher quality ones? How about using a 2.1 computer speaker system?

Whats wrong with the tv speakers? I mean when you want higher sound quality the natural thing is to go with a Audio system.

But no I don't know anyone who replaces there tv speakers with higher quality ones.It seems you have a need for this.

would that be considered "the poor man's home theater setup?. 2.0 surround. or get an svs pc-ultra and create 2.1. actually, i'm sure it might possibly help sound just a teencie weencie bit, but without higher amplification, it would all be for naught.

I'd certainly try it. Why not, if you can do it cheaply. If it doesn't work, take the drivers and stick em to your neighbor's car.. :D

I'm not referring to the main TV. Most of us can use our audio or HT systems.

Let's say you have a 27" TV in your bedroom. Just wondering if you can hook up a $40 2.1 powered computer speaker system to improve the sound.

Nevermind. Just thought about it -- even if it's possible, you'll need a wireless remote to adjust the volume. That'll probably make it cost prohibitive.

Not only that, but most TV's only have audio outs, so you'd still need an amp to run two speakers. You could perhaps accomplish it with a mini-plug (RCA to headphone jack) from the TV to computer speakers as most of them have amps in the sub, but it's really best to do a stereo receiver with two good bookshelf speakers. That's really the only way to upgrade TV speakers.

That said, I noticed a real difference on my Sony TV (Sony Tubes actually have pretty decent speakers) speakers hooking up some Audioquest Sidewinder interconnects from the cable box to the TV. Beats the shit out of those horrible, thin-black-wire cables they throw in. I can't even turn my TV up half-way without it being too loud (only use the TV speakers when it's late).

You could always use a minisystem for around $100 to improve the sound quality. My first system consisted of a sony $150 mini system, a 20in apex with s-video, a ps2, and a jvc dvd player. Sound quality was much improved with the minisystem in there. Just find one with audio inputs and your good to go.

Good idea. I have an old mini system in the basement that would work well. It has a remote, too, so I can program it into my other remote and adjust the volume. Zero cost. Cool.

Does this TV have audio out or external speaker connections? Another option might be running the audio out from the cable box if you have one.

I bet good 'ol Rat Shack has some kind of thingamajig that you could run your cable connection into and get audio out connections--RS is a great place to look for off-the-wall stuff...
