View Full Version : What to do with a free PSW10 i got?

As some of you probably read in another thread of mine, i bought some Polk Monitor 70s and a Polk CS2 the other day (upgrading from MTX). So far I am very pleased. Then i remembered that circuit city had a free subwoofer deal with purchases for $499 or higher on polk speakers. I went to circuit city and picked up my free PSW10 (actually i got a penny refund since they charged me 1 cent extra when i went in last time.... i never asked for it back then just added it back on).
ANYWAY.... I'm trying to figure out some uses for this thing. Its very attractive and matches my other new speakers. I don't have much use for another sub in here since i have a Velodyne CHT-12 which is already at a very low volume to match everything else. My room is only 11x14 ft
Currently I am using it as a speaker stand for my CS2. Looks pretty neat actually. Then i got the idea of connecting the wires that go into the CS2 into the speaker level input of the PSW10 and then back out to the CS2. Basically this just sends the bass info for the center channel to the PSW10 and the rest back up to the CS2. I have the volume at about 50% on the knob and it seems well balanced. Movies sound exactly the same except with just a little more fullness on any type of explosion or effect that happens through the center channel.
Those benefits arent too noticeable when i turn the Velodyne on since it just overpowers everything else so i was wonder what you guys would do. PSW10s dont sell for much on ebay. Perhaps i should just leave it connected to my center channel
what would you guys do in the same situation?

Try stacking it on top of the Velo and run the LFE in using a Y splitter from the receiver. You'll be running dual subs. Might get a small spike of 5-6db gain by stacking them.

Not a bad suggestion, but in my 11x14 ft room, i already have the velo on about 1/2 volume on the back of the sub and -10db on the receiver so volume isnt really an issue :)
This seems to be an interesting discussion though.... what to do with a small subwoofer that isnt really necessary but can still be used :)

You would get about this much gain but he said already is operating
the Velodyne at very low volumes and therefore probably does not
need the SPL.
I wouldn't corrupt the Velodyne sub output he has with such a joke
of a subwoofer...

althought tdeluce is probably right, I'm appreciative to any suggestions and i think that trying new things out is half of the fun :)

You are right, you just never know:-) But I would lay 2:1 odds it won't
be... That is comparing the two vrs turning up the Velodyne a few clicks...

I have sort of the same issue but i have the psw505 as my main sub and the psw 10 from a past purchase but what i'm going to do is run it was a dedicated sub for my rear speakers sort of like what your doing with the center channel but for my rears and i'm going to put the sub right behind my chairs.

I spent a couple hours redoing all the wiring to my speakers and connecting my surround speakers to the PSW10. Since it's late i havent been able to crank it up yet but i should have plenty of play time with it tomorrow :) It sure looks nice a cute and tomorrow i'll see how it works out. I might also get some monitor 30s to use for surrounds.
Does anybody have input on the Polk M10s. i might use those instead.

connected it to the rears and just tried it out and WOW it sounds phenominal!!! now explosions that happen in the back actually feel like they're happening behind me!!
The lesson of the story is:
If you have an extra sub that you dont know what to do with.... send it to the rears :)

as for the M10 - dont bother. pay a couple more dollars and at least get the monitor 30's. i really dont understand why polk make them, since they are not that much cheaper than the monitor series, and are (to my ears) significantly muddier.

Give that thing to someone who doesn't have a subwoofer. Let them pay for
the shipping and you will have turned someone on to DD and DTS :-)
Face it man, you ain't going to get much money for it...

Good suggestion, especially since its the holidays, but i already found a use for it, and that is to suppliment the surrounds with bass :)
