Dipoles for the sides , bookshelves for the rear.

I hung a pair of Rti6's up in the corners as rears and pointed them towards each other and you will be astonished at how real that will make the rear surround field appear. Do not waste your cash on rear floor standers. They just wont sound as good unless there up high. I know it is hard to believe but you have to try it to understand it.

Far more common to have rears at ear level if the room allows it.

CaptM.,
Agree with wingnut on dipoles as being the better choice for the sides.

Part of my "what the room allows" comment above is how far the rears are from your listening position. If a few feet or more, then direct radiators are a good option; if less, then diploes should be considered there as well.

Whatever you choose, if you have placement options, use stepladders to try different locations.

5.1- Dipoles for the sides. Monopoles for the rears.

7.1- Bipoles for the sides and rears: movies or music.
