DVD progressive scan [Archive]

I might be the only one on the forum with a non-progressive scan DVD player.

I have the Marantz dv4200. Nice player.

I have an LCD tv and wondering if I would and could benefit from a Pscan player?

What would I notice?

As long as your LCD accepts PScan input, you might want a Pscan player. progressive scan images are more fluid, film-like, smoother.

Do a Yahoo search on "what is progressive scan" to get all the details about the technology and it's benefits...

Deponds on if the TV or the player does a better job of making it progressive. Is the native resolution of your LCD 768p?

I am not sure, it indicates 1366X768. From what I put together the answer would be yes.?

P-scan really doesn't get you much on a nice TV... I'd stick with your DVD player & let the TV handle the deinterlacing

The TV cannot change an interlaced signal into a non-interlaced (progressive scan) signal, it's got to come from the source (DVD Player). If the DVD Player is not PScan, your TV is displaying interlaced images...

Willow, if your LCD supports it, try borrowing a friends PScan player and see if the increased quality is worth the upgrade cost...chances are you'll like Progressive scanning better.

Steve, his TV already converts the picture to progressive (and upscales it too). The PQ will only improve if the deinterlacer in the DVD player is > the deinterlacer that is already in his TV.

His LCD TV has a native resolution of 768p, meaning a 480i source will be deinterlaced and upscaled to his native resolution.

I know you can either use your DVDP or your TV to upscale (provided they support it) but I've never heard of converting a non-Pscan signal from a DVD.

If the TV has a native resolution that is progressive (540p, 768p, etc), YES. Deinterlacers are not limited to dvd players.

Now I'M confused. Is the signal on a DVD inherently "interlaced"? I would assume not, so if you h ave a progressive scan DVD player, it sends the "full" signal to the TV, which then just draws it. OTherwise the DVD player is essentially sending half the signal, which the TV just has to ... make up on the fly, via line doubling or whatever system they use. I see an inherent difference here...

Ok Now to add another twist, mine was the model without the chip, I was discussing this in another thread a while back asking if I should return mine for the one with the DCDI.

So now what does this mean?

doh! This means that you may benefit from Denon or another nice DVD player but may not benefit from a DVD player that you will find at CC.

DVD's are inherently interlaced. If you've got a quality TV, no need to drop cash on a p-scan player, especially if you really like the one you've got.

So I can connect my stone-aged non-progressive scan DVD, via super-video cable to a high tech HD TV and the TV will convert the image to non-interlaced? Holy Crapoli.

yep. Now the progressive DVD player has one advantage: it can do the conversion in digital domain. However, the variability in execution is so large, that if you're happy with your player and you've got a good tv, then there's no need to go out and buy a progressive player. I'll try to find you a link.

I've got a Philips 30" WS HDTV, which I believe is native 1080i, right? I just had my cable company come out and bring me my new HD/DVR box. Since my TV is an older model it has only one HD input, component or RGB. I had to hook up the receiver to the HD input via components. If I were to go out and get a HDMI to RGB cable(if there is such a thing) and hook it up that way, can I then rehook up my Pscan DVD player via the components or does it even really matter since you say that my TV will do the work for me??

There's no HDMI-RGB. Just HDMI to DVI and your DVI input has to be HDCP capable. Which HD box to you have? a bunch of them allow you to plug your DVD player into the HD box. When the box is turned off it passes the DVD signal. (or you can just get an AVR w/ component switching)

Not sure on that Philips, some 1080i tube HDTV's won't take a 480p signal.

On your HD STB, in its setup menu, can you make the output be 1080i via component?

(and yes it is the most confusing time in all of history to buy a TV)

Yes it does take 480p and the Motorola cable HD box sends 1080i. It also has a 120gb HD hard drive which, in standard resolution, is good for 60 hours...not sure how many in HD mode.

When the DVD was hooked up there the screen displayed 480p input and now with the HD converter hooked up the same channel displays 1080i input.

You will see a difference, my DVD player lets me go Progressive or Interlaced, not exactly sure why, but it definitely is more grainy when I switch to Interlaced...

Entry Prog Players are really inexpensive nowadays.

Get yourself a DVDO Iscan and hook it up to that VCR I sent you. You'll get a scaled progressive feed... :D

Well I didn't think mine was the only one ;) , just really don't know why they would even have such an option.

Maybe for those that are still using standard RCA's or S-Video I guess.

60h * (720 * 480) / ( 1920 * 1080) = 10h

Not sure how much the compression changes between the two so it might not be an accurate estimate at all... :)

I think mine is advertised 60h SD, 20h HD...

That reminds me- with TWC in Raleigh & a Sci ATL 8300 DVR box, if you take the remote and hit 9999 it'll go into the service menu & you can get lotsa info- Including hard drive space and est recording time left.

I saw that DVDO seems like a great thing, the down side is the price...couple of Gs
