tv settings (film or video)

in the picture settings on my toshiba 57 inch hd tv it was a seperate setting that u can change from film to video....came set on film....does anyone know the diffrence and which is better?

According to my DVD player user manual it states that it changes the Gray Scale.

IN my TV manual it states to place the mode in film for DVD's and Video for broadcasts.

I personnaly have flipped from film to video and couldn't see a difference.

I dont know what the tv actually does different on the two settings but if i had to guess i would asume it is changing something due to the fact that the capture rate is different between the two.

Film is 24fps and video is 30fps

The FPS is different but, some TV shows are filmed in film. So, it may have more to do than that.

It has to do with the 3:2 pulldown. Ok, on a dvd with a film source, before they interlace, they take 3 of one frame, 2 of the next... or 5 frames per two, so that 24fps on the film turns into 60 frames. Then they interlace them for ntsc purposes, yada- yada. The film mode knows about the 3:2, so when it de-interlaces to get progressive frames it pick off the right ones. Video mode tells it that every other frame is half the line and it deinterlaces just fine. Most TV's autodetect this these days- is it an older TV?

Anyhow, how to tell the difference- look for jagged edges on straight lines when they move across the screen.
