Just one and why. Possible 2nd.
Mine has to be "It's a Wonderful Life". I love this movie. I blubber like a little schoolgirl, but I like it.
My 2'nd would be "The Empire Strikes Back". I can't go a month without watching this one. If it was on DVD, I probably couldn't go a week.

Edward Scissorhands
It's got it all. My favorite director (Tim Burton), actor (Johnny Depp), actress (Winona Ryder) and composer (Danny Elfman). Very imaginative and very well done. I love the fantasy/fairy tale theme of the film.
...as for a 2nd. That'd be Moulin Rouge. From the fast pace direction, to the music, to the tragic love story.....excellent, excellent film.
Peace Out~:D

You're all bitches, every last one of you! It's a tough call for me to choose between "A New Hope" and "Return of the Jedi." This all goes back to when I was a kid. I never like ESB as much, because the good guys got their butts kicked. RotJ, on the other hand, was all about the Luke as the Jedi Knight and the Rebels whoopin' some booty. Of course, there's the whole Ewok thing......you know what, screw you guys! I like the TriOlogy.

I don't care HOW you cut it, George Lucas did NOT make the best movie ever.......
Lesse, how about, oh I don't know:
Magnificent Seven
Godfather
Casablanca
North by Northwest
Psycho
The Searchers
The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
Dog Day Afternoon
In Harm's Way
From Here to Eternity
I dunno, to pick my fave though, that's a tough one.

My old man is sitting at the kitchen table smoking a Lucky Strike (unfiltered) drinking a cup of coffee (2 sugar and coffee mate) bitching about how the Red Sox are going to blow it again this year just wondering when the stripers (Striped Bass) are going to start running in the Piscataqua and Saco rivers.
Haven't talked to him today but I know him like a book.

Troy - I hope I did not offend you with my post. I was just trying to poke a little fun at your feelings about Mr. Lucas. I can tell your dad meant a lot to you. I can understand that.

TroyD: You are absolutely correct by this statement. All the movies you listed are "great movies". But 9 times out of 10 I'd rather watch the 2 Austin Powers movies, than to invest the same time watching Citizen Kane.

BLUE VELVET - Dennis Hopper & two lovely ladies, Isabella Rossellini & Laura Dern. NOT your usual Hollywood crap. Has my favorite movie line, "I'll f*** anything that moves!"
PULP FICTION - Great story line, banter & of course "The Bonnie Situation."
MIDNIGHT in the GARDEN of GOOD and EVIL - Directed by Clint Eastwood (Top Ten Favorite Actor). Murder, mystery, voodoo & a wacky cast of characters. What more could you ask for. Again, NOT the usual mindless crap!

Too difficult.
But here are a few I have that make me laugh/cry/think EVERY time I watch them, and will therefore stand the test of time.
Amistad
Dead Poets Society
Glory
Good Will Hunting
Meet Joe Black
Runners-up would include:
A Few Good Men
Big Business
Legends of the Fall
Music of the Heart

You guys are all over the place.
Gotta have CASABLANCA. It's a perfect film, and has everything: love, death, deceit and revenge and redemption. And Bogart. And I cry every time at the same moment: "I thought I told you never to play th--..." Man, I just die.
Gotta have GUNS OF NAVARONE. It's the godfather of all modern action adventure films. There wouldn't be an Indian Jones if it weren't for GUNS OF NAVARONE.
Gotta have GOODFELLAS. Even in light of a great great film like THE GODFATHER (and GFII), there is nothing as powerful and real in the whole genre as GOODFELLAS. It is simply an awesome statement of the art of film.
Would a better way to do this be to try to your ultimate fave in each GENRE? Western, sci-fi, horror, comedy, etc? Cause even with these "gotta haves," I'm missing all the great great films I love. Like Troy's list. Hitchcock, ALL THE PRESIDENT'S MEN, THE SEARCHERS, ALIEN, STAR WARS (untampered with), JAWS...
BLAM!
That's my head exploding from all the great great films on my list.
BACKDRAFT? MALL RATS? PULP FICTION? GOOD WILL HUNTING? Yikes.

Micah,
Yes, Pulp Fiction or are you one of those people who couldn't follow what was going on? BTW, your picks---not bad.

"2001: A Space Odyssey." This is the way it should have been, instead of flying trucks called the space shuttle, no moon base, no missions to outer planets...man...reality really screwed us over.

Unquestionably..........."Five Easy Pieces."

another would have to be "Save The Tiger," although it is fiercely depressing. But the scene where he smokes pot with the young girl...........and rattles off all the old names. My God.

Great flicks in this thread. I have to add a bunch of them -- FIVE EASY PIECES, SANDPEBBLES! -- to my rentmydvd.com list! Time to see them again for the first time!
>> [PULP FICTION] are you one of those people who couldn't follow what was going on? <<
Yeah, that original super-genius Quentin Tarantino really bamboozled me with his stupendous filmmaking skill and screenwriting innovations. Ever seen THE BIG SLEEP, pre-release 1945 version? Christ, PULP FICTION was a big zero.

I have to go with Heat
Michael Mann made you love the "Bad Guys". And I have never had another movie experience like that. I wanted DeNiro (McCauley) to jump on that plane instead of going after Wayne Gro. I didn't want Pacino (Hannah) killing him. And you saw the pain in his eye's when he did, because Hannah actually liked him.
Plus the cinematography was excellent from McCauleys pad on the ocean to the shoot out scene after the bank heist. And the final scenes in 5.1 at the airport are just plain terrific.
Most of the other movies you guys picked were great picks, but for some reason I keep coming back to this movie.:D
