View Full Version : Flea Market Rant

Look, I'm tired of the cluster F the Flea Market has turned into.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE use it to JUST post items YOU have for sale, or wanted posts for gear YOU are looking for.

We can all search ebay and audiogon for SDA, Monitors, Etc. If you choose not to use the 'sticky' thread (which was made to help resolve this very problem), then post it elsewhere, perhaps in the VINTAGE SPEAKERS forum.

It's fine and dandy if you want to alert people to something someone else has for sale. It's a great way to help other members find that deal they have been looking for, and may not have noticed, or just popped up, etc. Keep it out of OUR Flea Market.

"Hey, check out these RT55's for sale (link atttached)" - turns into a 40 reply discussion of how stupid the seller is, how good a deal it is, or more often than not about the finer points of the speaker offered for sale. GREAT thread for the VINTAGE SPEAKERS FORUM.

If you are bidding on something, and want to alert others to it - POST IT IN VINTAGE SPEAKERS.

I'm not attacking anyone, or their opinions, or what they posted - I just think it's sad that a member can offer up a GREAT item, and not 5 hours later it's BURIED under threads containing links, and nothing to do with the FM. He/she shouldn't have to bump their thread 15 times over 3 days, to get the item noticed.

Lets all work together, and get the flea market tightened back up, and use it for what it was intended to be used for. The buying / selling / trading of FORUM members gear.

Cheers,
Russ

Russ, that makes a lot of sense. The Flea market should be for those wares members are selling amongst each other, not for links to other sellers stuff. Those types of links and discussion should go elsewhere. I'd say if it's Vintage speaker related put the link and discussion in that forum, if it's other electronic stuff put the link and related discussion in the Electronics forum. Makes perfect sense as the FM is for member to member sales. I'm guilty occasionally of posting links to other sales and I will now post in the appropriate forum. Let's all try to do the same. That way the FM will be less cluttered with crap.

Perhaps ask the forum owner/moderators to add a subforum for links to others gear? Would that make everyone happy?

We made a sticky thread for SDA, and people don't use it. All they have to do is post SOMEWHERE other than our FM.

I have found several items from the "hey, have any of you guys seen this on ebay" sort of posts. Besides, nobody cares if you bump an ad if it gets buried quickly. I like our flea market and how it works.

I've felt this way for a long time and agree with Russ. I'm surprised nobody said anything earlier.
This should also apply to postings of various "hot deals" that can be found at online or retail stores. I'm sure most of us have heard of Slickdeals.net and Fatwallet.com by now. If there is something that really garners attention here, it should go in the speakers or electronics forum.

You & I are on the same wave length Sami.

I think a subforum should be created for these kinds of thread & if someone forgets we can POLITELY ask them to post it in the: For Sale By Other Outlets.

How bout it Justin?

This is a good idea. Another area just for people who come across good deals and want to let us know.

This is how I found my RT5000 system and what brought me here also.

I'm guilty of this pretty regularly, never realized anyone had heartache about pointing folks in a GOOD direction, however, the links could be posted in the regular speaker, 2-channel, electronics, etc, etc, threads. Ok, I'm on-board...

...consider my hand slapped... ;)

Yeah, lets make a subforum for links to stuff for sale from people that dont give a rats ass about Club Polk. Great idea. Afterall, they deserve their own forum. Lets give them two while we are at it.

Gotta love Polkies, lets tweek and overthink everything, and here goes another thread into multiple pages, full of everyones idea on the topic, vs just simply using it for what it was originally intended for.

Me? I'll go back to not giving a shit anymore. Matter of fact, lets jack it up even more! Let me go find some links to post.

I don't see the issue with people posting good deals from other on-line sites in the Flea Market because it's the logical place to put such things. I'd be all for a sub-forum, but if one doesn't come about I would say it's a bit ridiculous to ban all such threads from the FM. I bought some stuff from those deal threads and they serve their intended purpose. You can tell who is just trying to make a buck, and they get weeded out pretty fast.

why not just put it in its appropriate slot. find a good deal on an amp, put it in electronics or 2 channel. Speakers? hey, how about putting it in the speaker forum? I'll admit that when the links to other sales is few, I dont care. But I have missed some cool stuff because it is burried by multiple "look at this deal" posts.

its not rocket science :D I dont think another forum topic is neccesary

Ed Zachary. I agree with Russman that we should reserve the FM for "polkie deals."

I don't really think that another forum topic is necessary either. But I also don't mind the posts in the Flea Market either, since it is stuff for sale & someone here might be interested in it. I'd rather it there, than scattered all over the board in every forum.

I was simply trying to find a way to compromise so that almost everyone can be happy.

There are some who are never going to be happy no matter what is done but that is their problem not the entire boards.

I don't really care too much about it, but a subforum would help clean up the flea market, and allow OUR sales to stay on that front page longer, thus giving them more exposure.

John,
You're starting to creep me out man. Get out there and find yourself a stud muffin!

Russ,
I agree with you. I try to avoid the FM section for the sake of my bank account but when I do venture into it I sometimes see quite a bit of stuff that shouldn't be there.

Did you get my e-mail about the GTA?

Russ,

I agree some of the things should be elsewhere on this site. I have been guilty of this on occasion but usually to let someone know about Polk gear. Noted.

Just my $0.02, but I like the forum as is. I've gotten some good deals from folks posting things they've found elsewhere (the MonsterPower 3500II most recently).

As far as the suggestion to put the posts in their appropriate forums (electronics, vintage, etc.), probably not a good idea. That would litter the entire forum with buy/sell/deal threads, since people (especially newbies) would not know where to post them. At least now those kinds of posts are somewhat consolidated.

I don't think there's any need to turn this forum into any more of an oldtimer police state than it has already become...

I don't really see a problem with the way it's working now. The flea market seems to be the logical place to post items for sale and to provide others with a "Heads Up" if you find an interesting deal. It shouldn't be used to run an audio business out of your garage or to sell Tupperware.

No changes needed. If you're not interested, don't look at it.

Schris22
01-10-2006, 06:36 PM
so new forum for non polk to polk transactions and one for all others and a headsup...

thats what some want and some don't want?

I don't see why it would be a problem to get one for polks only. Shouldn't this please both crowds.

Go to whichever forum you want.

I don't care where you post 'em, just keep 'em comin'. It's a nice gesture to let other folks know about good deals, both Polk and non-Polk, audio and non-audio.

Well, I guess I am the guilty party for posting the SDA's for sale in Canada. Why did I post it in the FM area, I guess 2 reasons.

1) I had seen similar posts there for Polk speakers (No a big reason)
2) I do not sell things so my concern was more for providing information to other fellow forum members.

I have seen it posted here before that it is nice to keep these "big bad boys" (some name) in the family. It was my intent to help some of the Canadian folks out as getting those huge speakers across the border could be a nightmare. I agree that it clogs the FM forum because the next thing you know people will be providing links to whatever. Ok, someone create a Polk rule and we will adhere to it. Hell, if I wasn’t so obsessed with Proac speakers I would have purchased the damn speakers.

I like the Flea Market the way it is, a subforum would be nice tough for non Polk sales. I do not visit every forum and I think people would have a tough time searching to buy something if they have to go all over to find it and then flooding the other forums with items in the wrong category.
