Seems like a stupid question, but one that I guess I need to ask....When you set the speaker size sitting in a receiver (small...large) what is that really setting? Is it a crossover setting separate from the sub crossover? Why does it matter? I have RTi70 fronts, a CSi30 center and RTi28 surrounds. What should the speaker size be set to?.....Oh....My receiver is a JVC RX-884V (it's no HK, but seems to perform better than a run of the mill Sony or Pioneer and treating me well until I decide to upgrade.)
Thanks! a_mattison
OH...I have the receiver crossover set at 100hz and the crossover on my Velo Ct-12 all the way up around 120hz. What should the crossover freaquency be set at?

Running your JVC on large will cause it to go into thermal shutdown when used for multi-channel music. It will be okay for movies since they don't power all channels with the same signal. I ran the same speakers that you have with my JVC 9010VBK until I got my HK 7200. In all kinds of settings and testing, I found the RTi70 to sound best set to small, even on my HK. They got muddy in the midrange ran full range. I like my crossover around 80hz.

Thanks! Your JVC must have the same amp circuit...looked up specs...
120 watts x 2 min. RMS, both channels driven into 8 ohms from 20Hz to 20kHz with no more than 0.08% THD
100 watts x 5 min. RMS, into 8 ohms, 1kHz, 0.8% THD
...I just looked at the back of my velo and there is a switch internal crossover or direct. I chose direct and will cross over at 100 hz unless someone has a better idea.
I just got the 30 and the 28's. Until today I didn't have matched speakers with my RTi70's. Just watching the Matrix right now to check the new setup out. It rocks!! Of course I see an H/K in my future though. This forum sure has a way of making you want to spend money!

One more thing....
Dennis, When you made the move from JVC to your H/K, how would you rate the change in sound that you noticed.....are we talking "blow you mind, quantum leap" in sound or "Wow... that does sound nicer"
I've been considering upgrading for a while. Looks like you can get some great deals on www.harmonaudio.com on rebuilds. Was thinking maybe a 635.

It was a big change in sound quality. Much fuller and powerful with more clarity at all volume levels. Probably as big a move for my HT as my move to SDAs or tube preamp for my 2 channel rig.
