Yesterday my wife and I had some friends over and my wife decided to light some candles. Well, she placed one of those jar candles on top of my new M20's. I noticed it, stopped and thought about it, and decided that since it was ontop of some pieces of tile, and in a jar it should be safe. Wrong. The jar broke as the wick burned to the bottom and wax leaked all over the front of the speaker, all the way to the carpet. I noticed it just as my wife was serving appitizers and screamed" Oh @%^$#!!!" Fearing the worst I blew out the candle and removed the grill to see red wax had dripped all over the tweeter, woofer, pooled in the port, and gotten on the back of the grille. It had also pooled at the base of the speaker on the carpet. I quickly grabbed a roll of paper towels and tried to wipe off the wax but only smeared it as it was still warm. By this point, the guests were silent and my poor wife had turned a nice shade of white. I carefully laid the speaker on it's back like a stricken patient and within seconds we all had rolls of paper towels and were carefully wiping the wax off. Long story short, I let it dry and used a cuticle tool to remove the wax from the woofer and from around the edge of the tweeter. The cone of the tweeter did not get any wax on it, but the woofer did. I was able to scrap off the wax and you cannot tell that it had wax on it. As for the grille, I was able to use a steamer to clean it. I laid paper towls on it, then applied the steamer and it removed the wax. (Which is how we removed the wax from the carpet also). I am wondering how it will affect my speaker though. Will the sound be compromised because of the wax even though it has been removed? And never again shall a candle burn near my speakers......

I would imagine compromise would only occur if there was actually wax on the woofer, since its mass would add to the woofer and unbalance it. If you got it off I don't think there should be any problem.

tough to answer, I would just use my ears to see if you hear a difference between the the left and right speaker.

Bummer for sure

you just reminded me to kindly remove the candle jars that my wife thought would add some "decorative flair" to my new speakers
i say it's all part of their "master plan" :)

I am with you on this one, Russ! Whenever my girlfriend comes over, she always talks about how the speakers look out of place because there is nothing on top of them. Why do there always have to be nik nacks on top of everything?

Poor speakers.... what have they done to deserve this?? :(

LOL, but that goes against the entire Martha Stewart regime. If they even let us have speakers that are not Blose, then we must "fancy" them up with crap. I saw one poor soul with littel glass figurines on top of his monitors. They would rattle when any bass kicked in. The result was his wife saying to turn it down.

Are you kidding me!!! When did the man stop being the king of the castle?

I HAD to put stuff on top of my speakers, otherwise my dearly departed cat Tami thought that it was her duty to jump on to one, jump over to my tv, then on to my other speaker so she could sit there & preen! :D

Mind you, my towers were already about 7" off of the ground on stands!

Anything that represented a challenge for her to jump, SHE WOULD TRY IT!

So I have a pair of phonebooks on one & my George Forman grill on the other!

My beloved cats are gone now, but since space it tight I have left the stuff where it is!

The arrangement in my prior house had one of the speakers near the entry way. Visiting women love to place their purse, keys, etc on the speaker...well, after showing my ass a few times, my wife made sure she nipped it before it could happen.

One time an interior designer came over (for the new people buying our house) to take some measurements, as her clipboard was about 6 inches from the top of my speaker, my wife practically dove across the room to grab it---it was funny seeing her "defend" my speakers.

I'd recommend if you have a speaker that's in a location that makes it a handy "end table" get glass tops cut for them. Cost about $7 a piece at a local glass shop---well worth the investment.

LOL that is pretty funny! Although i mentioned how my girlfriend doesn't like my speakers being so "empty" on top, she still respects my request to not put stuff on top of them. She doesn't even touch them actually, but she really enjoys listening to them!

On the other hand, the front left speaker (a Monitor 70) is right by the door to the room, and almost everybody uses it to lean on when talking to me. When I ask them not to do it, they look at me like im crazy. When the blinds are open and the sun shines in, you can always see lots of fingerprints and stuff on top of that one speaker and its hard to get off. I really hate it when people place keys and other sharp objects on top. The previous speaker i had there before i got the Polk Monitors was full of scratches on top after 1 year.

Im going to put those needles that they use in rain gutters to keep birds out on top of my speakers!

I'd never put candles on top of my logans..... can you imagine what wax will do to the stator panels?? YIKES!

Maybe this is one of the unofficial reason why newer topline speakers have their tweeters in a separate enclosure on top of the speakers, making it impossible to use as a shelf. :)

I have the ultiamte solution for both sexes. say you have rtx800i as mains, a nice thing to place on them would be.... a nice stylish rt35i. The only thing that I even consider putting things on is my sub, and then its only the dvd case while its playing, but 99% of the time it ends up on the floor :)

LOL. I am the same way. Lucky for me, my speakers are in corners of the ht room, and my Old Lady never brings her friends in there, unless they watch a movie.
I had an old pair of cheap Sony towers, and had some jacka$$ sit a beer on the top of it during a party, and when I noticed, it was too late. I had this Big a$$ ring on the top of my speaker, and the party was over shortly after that.
Good thing they were Sony and not Polkaudio speakers.

I have had 3 pictures rattle off my speaker and break on the floor.
We might have learned after last nights broken frame.

As for the wax I think you will find that the speaker in question will sound better now that it has a smooth waxed surface that no sound can stick to.

I had a similar problem with my t.v.
A candle on top of my t.v. let loose when the dam broke and wax flowed down the front of my set. The wax flowed down the back of the screen protector and into the little groves in the screen.
It took me hours to scrape all the wax out of the groves with a needle. You can still see where it was if you know where to look.

Lets all repeat together...

NO MORE CANDLES.

Wow that blows, almost as good as my Ex deciding to water the Plants on top of my Onkyo... I got there just in time to see flames shooting out of the top... Even under extended warranty they would not repair...

I believe the repair guys comments were "Who the hell puts the plants on top of a reciever to water them? You're not sersiously thinking we are going to cover that do you?" Been awhile but I don't think we spoke to each other for a few weeks after that...

That's like saying bicycles should be banned because they're traffic hazards and we have cars for transportation now...

Been there, done that!

My wife put a candle on top of my Sony tube tv. Wax dripped all down the front of the TV, and on some of the wood on the front of the rack. It took quite a bit of clean up to get it all off, but in the end no real harm. The worst part was getting all of the wax out of the small holes for the speakers on the TV.

I had some wax drip onto the veneer of my old yamahas. I got it off, but because the wood veneer has grooves in it, it was very hard to make it look natural again. Who cares though, those speakers sucked and I sold them :)

The only thing that has "sat" on my gear, is my own personal "gear"....so be wary of what you buy from me. I have most certainly touched that gear, in an inappropriate manner at some point of it's existance here.

Well said. I was about to mention the custom tops. Still, no liquid, including hot wax should ever be allowed near the gear. It's so funny, speaker set up guides tell us that coffee tables are the bane of our clear sounding HT living room, yet without it, zipperheads would use the cabs for drink stands. Guess you have to make some sacrifices for good sound.

So much for drinking anything....

Oh.
