SOLD.
No phono section, three inputs, two out. (Gary Dodd had said via email he could add a phono section if desired). Conservatively rated an 8/10. Reason for sale is my custom pre will finally ship next week. Will ship double boxed, insured, in the original packaging with instructions, remote, original Sovtek 12AX7-LPS and four Baldwin 12AX7 tubes. I purchased this from forum member polkatese back in November. No issues. Forum member’s peersool, Normanality, and McLoki have seen/heard it in action. $OLD HTrookie.
I have 12 positive feedback here, and 100% on Ebay (http://cgi3.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewUserPage&userid=scompracer) with 132 positives, 60% as seller.

That's a beautiful pre. Are those white things under the hood the sockets for the tubes?

Very nice guy to do business with! I would worry about how to get the funding passed the WAF, not about the seller ;)
I take it that the McAlister is in, huh??

Thanks for the kind words. No McAlister pre yet, just a "call you guys Sunday, your pre's are finally ready to ship" email. That means I'll find out the balance owed and will need some cash.
If he decides to market this pre, it will debut at an upcoming audio show in Montreal, March 10-14. Until then, we (Norm and I) were asked not to reveal too many details about it or post any pictures. We should find out the extent of our NDA on Sunday.

I'll presume that's not what he meant. It's apples and oranges, as we're talking to completely different pre-amps internally and in design theory. If the Cary 2002 was a simple 3/2 w/ outboard PS, I bet it would look pretty similar.

Thank's for you phone call! It was great to talk with a fellow nut! I'm going to continue on with my research as we discussed but in the mean time if anyone has to have it, please go ahead and make their day! I'm not 100% sure I can arrange the $ anyways

I have to say I'm kicking myself for letting this slip away! But timing and money are not right for me now. Hope you enjoy it and keep me in mind when you want to get rid of it. At least it's coming to Ohio!

Tube are a bad thing my friend. I'm pretty sure the FDA is going to issue a heath warning about their addictive nature soon! Maybe even impose taxs on them!
But thank's for waiting to claim your prize. Hope it makes magical sounds for you. Just how far are you away form Cleveland anyway?

I'm in the other side of Ohio...Southern border; 20 miles north of Cincinnati.
Yeah, tubes might be dangerous some people say; this will be my second tube preamp, and a tube amp might be in my future :)

Thanks Rich; as mentioned in my PM, I have a bunch of planned changes and I am not sure I'll be disciplined enough to do them one by one and slowly as to appreciate the changes (this pre, I got the caps and resistors for crossovers today, and have a DAC that need to hook up...).
But...I will report Thursday night :)

Ok; here we go. Don't expect a pro review....I am no expert and hardly understand the concepts of imaging, depth, etc. etc.
First of all, I think that the system as it was sounded pretty damn good; the Dared tube preamp made a huge improvement when I got it a few months ago and I really thought that it would be hard to notice additional improvements. (Wrong, wrong, wrong). The rest of the system? Cambridge Audio D500 SE player, JBL Urei amp (thanks Russ, I love it), the mighty 1.2 TL's and outlaw inteconnects all over. Audioquest type 4 speaker wires.
I hooked up the MLP and the first thing I did before hitting the play button was to look for the "hum" that I've heard others complain about. Well, no hum, hiss, shhhhh or anything like it. I do hear a "sssss" if I get 2 inches close to the tweeters, but that was there before and I guess it is totally normal, and if it is not, I don't mind it anyway. Not sure if the Outlaw interconnects help here; I remember when Noel had a hum problem I let him use a pair of Outlaws and he noticed imporvement; I think he still uses them.
I've been listening since yesterday to only two CD's in preparation for this: Jane Monheit's "Taking a Chance on Love", and Disc 2 of Chick Corea's "Rendezvous in New York". I love both of these CD's. I like Jane more than Diana Krall and Norah Jones; sweetest voice. Chick Corea's is a SACD hybrid , mainly piano and drums, with LOTS of dynamics. Very nice recordings both.
So what do I think?
With Jane's CD it was hard to tell a difference initially; starts with just vocals with very low instruments; some piano but not a lot..... What I did hear was the voice dead on center, more than before. It also somehow made the sweet spot wider; before I had to be exactly in the middle of the two speakes or the sound moved violently to the side I was leaning to, while now I can move a little and it feels like the centered voice moves with me, if that makes any sense. With track 5 (I won't Dance), there's heavy "Big Band" instruments, and here I could spot two differences; the soundstage is a little wider (good SDA in this song), but what was more obvious was the bass; I don't know how to explain this, but it was like more violent, vivid. I enjoyed it so much that I played the song a couple more times. Big smile on my face.
Now for the real winner of the night; Chick Corea. I've played this CD twice already, and I am not sure I can stop :) This is the beauty about making improvements to your system. You hear something that you've heard 100 times, and it sounds better than ever. I think this is one of the best sounding CD's I have; Well, if I close my eyes, I swear I "feel" the instruments in the room. This is most noticeable with mids and lows. The drums...you know when you hit a drum not too hard, but it is so tight that it's like you feel the echoe? That's what I hear.... it is so alive. Same with the piano; mid and low notes sound amazingly real. I love it. :)
Enough for now; No need to say I am really happy with the MLP. Rich, thanks again for a smooth transaction; I enjoyed talking with you and I hope you get your new pre soon!!
