I bought these Monitor 10s. . .Love them for their energy and for their sound.
I am curious about the tweeter?? I have heard you guys talk about tweeters on several occasions. Mine say just Monitor 10. . .No "A" or "B" just 10. . .
Can you tell from the picture??
I paid 200 bucks for the pair. They are perfect, absolutely mint condition and sound wonderful. . .
BTW. . .I have since turned the grills over so the logo is now in the bottom right corner. . .

Those are the SL2000 tweeters. The ones that most people replace with the RD0194-1.

Thanks. . . I will put them on my want list. . . So far they sound great. They do very well however I have noticed some instability on high female vocals (The Leslie Song "Summertime") but not enough to point at anything just yet. . .

The 10's are nice speakers. I enjoyed mine, and only got rid of them to try SDAs for awhile. Gotta love that vintage Polk sound!

He means that your model is the 10B. You have the tweeter would benefit from the replacement silk dome.

So what do I do?? Order them from Polk or are do I watch or search eBay or the like??
Mine sound pretty good however since I started this thread I have paid more attention. Played "The Leslie Test" a couple more times and they do get a bit hard and edgey for lack of a better word. Maybe the new ones will smooth out the bumps. . . I do know that these 10s are keepers. Love their energy in my HT system and I like how they sound for stereo. . .

Will do. . .Thanks guys. . .
I know you get tired of telling one person after the other the same thing over and over but I for one appreciate it. What goes around. . . .
Maybe I will be on the other end at some point. . .
I will do it eagerly. . .

Thanks. . . Actually I grew up in Macon, Georgia, lived in the Northwest (Eugene, OR) for 25 years, then South Georgia (Americus) for 20 years, off the Dallas, TX for 2 years and now in Columbus, OH for the last 3 years. . . I only have one move left so that better be a good one.
I have always loved good sound be it music or movies. I went through several stages along the way from my first Curtis Mathis home entertainment center through my JBL years (L-112/150A/250/212 and more) and my Sony ES period on through several separates years (Adcom GFA-1/555/555II), the Rotel years (RB-985THXMkII/980/981) Marantz AV-550/9000 started my HT world that followed by Pioneer Elite receivers (VSX45TX/VSX56TXi) to my baby HK (240) that I use today along with my SVS PB12+2 and my little PB10 both soon to be replaced with the PB12Ultra2. . .YeeHaaaa. . .
When do I learn the secret handshake??

With your style and that audio lineage, you don't need the handshake...
LOL.... "the Rotel years".... loved that...

It's not my favorite either but it will test your system. . . Her voice cuts right through you. . . Makes my ears itch. . .

I think what hoosier is saying is that it's poorly recorded and thus may not be a fair test...

That too. . .
IIRC there were a couple of those "Stereophile" CDs made because of poor recording or somesuch.

Final question. . .
Is this new tweeter a replacement or an upgrade?? Is it a direct drop-in??
dorokusai

It's a drop-in replacement that's so good, it's an upgrade.

Guy, good one! I have a pair of Model 10's coming to me in about a week. Should I look into tweeter replacement as well? Mine are supposedly the peerless ones.

no you don't need to replace/upgrade your tweeters... only makes sense for those speakers that use the SL2000. keep your tweeters in those 10's. :)

Hey John, I know those speakers. . . I saw them around the same time I bought mine. . .Thought briefly about a road trip. . .
As far as tweeters go these guys here know best. . . All I know is I am steady looking at Polk speakers now. Kinda like a bigger pair for fronts and put my 10s in the rear. . . But no hurry. . . Something will jump up when I least expect it, besides I got lots to learn first.

Question I have now is what is the normal placement height for these speakers? Also, I planned on running them with a 160 watt/ch Sansui integrated, enough power?

bigyank, that should be fine on power.. for some reason.. vintage Polks like yours seem to sound best with other vintage stereo equipment powering them. That's what i found out with my Monitor 7's anyway.
plug those babies in and take a listen. and report back.. :)

Right now I am driving mine with my baby HK 240 receiver (50wpc) and it is wonderful. . . Of course I have the low bass (<80Hz) cut off and sent to the sub. I have a small (12x18) room which helps too. . .
I do intend to put them on my Kenwood KA3300SD integrated amp (150wpc+)however.

I like the 10's best on original, or a copy of, the kick-back stands Polk sold. They lift them off the floor about 6 inches, and tilt them back about 5 degrees. Makes for a poor-mans time alignment if you will.
Member Dorokusai has a reference thread, about how to make a DIY version of the stands, seek and ye shall find.
Cheers,
Russ

I made my first pair 9in tall with a 10 degree tilt. . . Now that I know better how to build these (quick and easy) I do intend to lower them and not quite so much back tilt. . . It does make a difference. . .

Got a line on a single 5jr that I have just enough room under my TV for. It is an LCD so shielding is not a problem. . .
I am thinking of using it for center for now and later pick up some more for rear surrounds.
Anyone have experience using a center like this??
