Hi,
I've been on a little buying spree as of late and find myself in need of a component rack or rack system. Does anyone have a decent one lying around that they would like to sell? Budget is a little flexible, but I would like to stay under $150 plus shipping. Thanks.

I bought a couple of these on clearance for less than $100 shipped. They scratch pretty easy since they are painted.

I got one too. $89 delivered. They were out of the light cherry so I ended up with black and silver. I think they still have the rosewood. A good stand for the price. Put it together in about 15 min.

If you want to go really cheap(I did) you can get a decent rack from Kmart for only $20. It actually looks pretty good and it gets the job done nicely. Took 5 minutes to put together. Check it out here (http://www.kmart.com/catalog/product.jsp?productId=102696&Ne=561&N=3109&categoryId=3109&pCategoryId=561&gpCategoryId=466)

damn $20 :D The only bad part is the max weight on the top shelf is 66 lbs which shouldn't be a problem unless you have a tube amp.

I kinda like this open air design $59

Good selection and prices. I've used them before with no problems.

While I am still looking for a good used rack, I can't pass up the $20 deal just to get this stuff off of the carpet. The only thing is that other closeout rack looks like an actually really nice rack. What to do??? Are those closeout racks worth jumping on right now??

I've used this site too. They have a good selection. If you can spend a little more I would go for one of the VTI's like the BL404. I have one of the rack stands of the same design and like it.

I ended up purchasing the K-Mart. Just put it up. It does the job. Decent shelves, poor supports (plastic). However, until I make up my mind, well worth the $20. Thanks,

It should hold you over until you find something better. The stand from QS&D looks very nice. I'd go with that one, or you can build a flexi rack if you're a hands on kinda guy.

Okay, what is a flexi rack?

Did you not even bother to read the thread you started? There were even a couple of links posted for flexi-racks.

Flexy racks can be pretty nice. I built one out of white marble. If I may suggest -- don't use marble if you plan on ever wanting to move the damn thing. It weighs over 100 lbs by itself which means you have to disassemble it everytime you want to move it.

Maybe a pic to get you started?

I went into my local BigK yesterday to check out this cheapo rack, and it only would hold up to 22lbs on the shelves!!! What's up with that?! Semi-cool look for the price, i'll give ya that, but common... 22lbs? My wifes right breast is... never mind. :D

Mr Nightly, the top shelf can hold up to 66 lbs. I've got my hk receiver sitting on it with no problem.

Let's hear more about your wife :p

hmmm, I must have missed that. I saw it, and read 22lbs max, and walked away in disgust ;)

Now that wifey... let's just say, I'm a lucky man! I'd post pics, but then i'd get banned. hehehehe... banned from her too probably!

Looks nice. Well done.

Did they have anything in black wood instead of the real wood? Everything in my HT room is darker (Black leather seating, dark walls, darker carpet) that natural wood would stick out like a sore thumb.

Regardsless, apparently you are quite the handy man. My compliments.

GATOR3000,
If you want to hide the allthread you can use coper pipe cut in proper lengths to go in between the wood. Coper will polish up real nice.
You can also get aluminium or stainless steel pipe.
Looks real good what you have done there.

Thanks guys. I guess one may use a variety of materials. Someone in this thread used marble slabs to build audio rack. Skynut…….I was going to cover the threads, but decide to leave it natural. This was just an experiment.

Skynut, good suggestion with the copper pipe. I might try it and spray the racks with couple coats of clear lacquer.

GATOR,
Out of curiosity, what kind of wood did you use? Is that 3/8" plywood? I am interested in building one of these. It looks like those shelves can withstand quite a bit of weight.

Thanks,
Shawn

All materials are from home depot.

1. I used Ύ” thick laminated (glued) pine boards 12” wide. These come in 6’ and 10’ lengths. Also, available in 16” widths and 6’and 10’ length.

2. Cut the boards to suit you component equipment width.

3. Drill 5/8” dia. hole in all 4 corners of each board. (The centre of 5/8” dia. hole is 1” from the edges of the board).

4. Sand and finish boards to your taste.

5. Use ½” dia. threaded anodized steel rod and slide the rod through the hole in each corner.

6. Thread ½” dia. hex nuts and washers onto each threaded rod to hold boards in place.

7. Level board and tighten the top hex nuts only. (Do not over tighten hex nuts. Snug tight only).

8. Repeat step 6 and 7 as required for number of desired boards.

Please be cautious when you working with power tools and wear safety glasses............. :) Just kidding, but it is a good idea.

To thread all those nuts takes time. Make sure you are listening to your favorite tunes cranked up on those Polk speakers!

I had to take it apart and thread it all back together again. Must have took me about an hour and a half, and I only have four shelves!

nice DYI rack, Gator!

btw, noticed your CDP-40, whoa, I still have my CDP-30 fully functional and active in the kids bedroom rig. Too much memory that goes with it, initially almost bought CDP-101 but don't have enough coins, so I wait around for a year and bought CDP-30 for 3/4 the price of 101. Good to see its sibling on someone else's rack.

Not sure how well wheels on a flexi rack would work, although it would be a lot easier to move around with casters. I wouldn't want them on mine because it weighs so much and don't want it flexing (marble doesn't like to flex). I had to actually put mine on wooden blocks so that it doesn't make permanent divots / holes in my carpet.

Thank for the complemente on rack. Yes, mine is still fully operational. I bought it 24 years ago. She cranked up some good tunes over the years. Lots of memories here too.

HD casters would work on hard surface only. Yes, it can be done nicely as you can buy threaded caster shoes to match the vertical threaded rod. No casters here as I have W to W carpets.

Gator:) :)
