View Full Version : which is the better choice?

okay.
2 Kicker Solo-Baric S8L5 8" Subwoofers
Phoenix Gold Octane-R 8.0:1 OR Phoenix Gold Octane-R 8.0:4
OR
2 Polk MOMO MM2104 10" Subwoofers
Polk Audio Carbon C300.2 OR Polk Audio Carbon C400.4
It may be silly to ask a bunch of people from polk to tell me which is the better choice between the two, but i would like any and all opinions. If I go with the 2 Kickers, which would be a better Amp to power it, the 8.0:1 or the 8.0:4? If i go with the 2 Polks, which amp would be better to power them, the C300.2 or the C400.4?
With each choice paired with the proper amp, which of the two would sound better?

I would most definitely go with the Polk setup, because it's going to give you a lot better SQ. The Kickers will give you alot more SPL, but I'd much rather take the Polks.
Hmm...I'm thinking about which amp to use with the MM2104's, and how to wire 'em, but I'm in math lab...so...I'll get back to ya on that one...
If using (2) Polk woofers, why not use a C500.1?

The Kickers are great subs and can move some serious air and those PG's are well built amps and will cleanly make their rated power but probably not too much more.
The Polks, while maybe not moving as much air as the Kickers still can get pretty loud but most importantly they sound great! Im using a Momo 10 in my truck and at competitions my bass scores are always very high!
Thom is right that a 500.1 would be a better choice for 2 subs as it easily exceeds its rated power and makes about 600 watts which would be a perfect match for a pair of MM2124's. Also, Id stack the build quality of the Polk amps up against ANY brand out there.

I think going with the Polk subs with the 500.1 is the better choice as well.

Just to point out...he's interested in the MM2104, not MM2124.

Right, which is why the 500.1 is the better choice.
Youve got a pair of 300 watt subs and a single amp thatll send out 600 watts between them.

Just pointed it out 'cause you stated MM2124 in your post. Brain fart? Oh well.

Oh, and by the way. I'm pretty sure it's just 'typo'. No need to hyphenate it.

wow thanks everybody, ive never gotten so many responces :D
the guy who is installing this for me suggested the Kickers because he claims they hit like 12's but have the acoustical accuracy of 8's.
but personally, i like the polk selection better
if i went with the 2 Polk MM2104's, would the C300.2 be able to push them well? how much wattage would it be able to send each sub? if i had it wired in 2 ohms, wouldnt it give 300 each? thats the reccomended wattage anyway.. the reason im asking is because the C300.2 is a bit more affordable then the C500.1.
How much wattage would the C500.1 deliver to each sub? and how much wattage would the C400.4 deliver to each sub?
another question i had is which is the better sub between the Polk MM2104 and the Polk MM104? On cardomain it says that the MM104's reccomended wattage is 500, while the MM2104's reccomended wattage is 300. which give better bass and which give better sound quality?
i know that this is the wrong place to ask, but if anybody has a new or slightly used C300.2, C400.4, or C500.1, and are looking to sell it, please let me know.
i know i have a lot of questions :x, but ANOTHER one i have (sorry :x) is your opinion of the Polk MMC 690 compared to the MMC 650 and MMC 525. which of the three have better sound quality and which deliver more bass?
sorry i have so many questions.. but i trust all of your opinions more then what ive been told, as you are the experts :D.
i would appreciate any and all comments or questions answered.
thanks Club Polk, you guys own. :)

going backwards... the 6x9 will provide more bass, but with dual subs, that is a non-issue... i'd go with the 6.5 over the 5.25 speaker for the midbass support, however...
if you're looking for amps, the garage sale segment is the place to ask...
the difference between the mm2104 and the mm104 is that the 104 is an older, and seemingly less-reliable model... basically a higher-powered version of the same sub, but we've heard a lot of reports of failures... i'd go with the 2104...
i can't think now, so no answer on the amp question (excedrin migraine gives me a feeling that's remarkably similar to being extremely drunk)...
as for the installer's quote... ah... i fear it...

okay so if i go with the mm1204's, how effective would the C300.2 be at pushing them? the same for the C500.1 and C400.4?

...i realize that a C500.1 would be good for pushing them.
i just want to know how the C300.2 would push them, as it is more affordable.
MacLeod
02-22-2006, 07:09 PM
It wont push them as well as a 500.1
The 300.2 would make either 150x2 or 500x1. The 500.1 would make 600x2.
The 500.1 is a better choice for either a MM2104 or 2124.
neomagus00
02-22-2006, 07:27 PM
actually, the 500.1 will make 600 x 1, but it's still 300 watts apiece as opposed to 250 apiece...

The 500.1 would make 600x2.
*ahem* That should be 600x1.

okay. so i guess i'll be getting the MM2104's and a C500.1..
anybody have any experience with a sound deadening product called Rattle Trap Extreme? if so, how does it compare with Dynamat? is it a product of Fatmat? Dynamat would normally be my first choice.. but its pretty expensive.
Best price i can find for a Dynamat Xtreme Bulk Pack is roughly 120 including shipping, and thats 36 sq feet.
on rattle trap xtreme, however, i can get 50 feet for 110 including shipping.
the site that sells the rattle trap claims that it is 80 ml thick while dynamat is 60 ml thick.
just wondering if anybody knows or has experience with rattle trap..
or if you know of a relatively inexpensive sound deadening that works great, please let me know.

hextant - as far as most installers have told me, xtreme is the way to be... members here have had success with the home-construction version of the same stuff, found in home depot etc. i believe that mac uses a product called tsunami... i've always personally been quite satisfied enough with dynamat xtreme to pay their prices... cody reccommends second skin (www.secondskinaudio.com)...

goto ebay type in the search c500.1 there is many polk 500.1 on there decent price.. half what tweeter charges cant beat the price on there tweeter marks up 100% over cost.. I had a guy that gave me mmc690 for $123 retail was 240 at the time there. I run 2 mm2104's pushed with c500.1 and more then suprised by the quality and sound i have. Best choice I ever made.. use to have a jl 250/1 big difference when i went to the polk amp.

I would rather stick with authorized dealers and know exactly what I am getting.
The gear that I have now all has been bought through authorized dealers, and I paid what I believe were very fair prices.

I also know that my gear is backed up by a factory warranty.

Buy authorized. Not only does it support Polk but you have their full blessing and support should you ever need it. Plus you know that what youre buying is new in the box and straight from the factory as opposed to possible refurbs, repaired, remanufactured or out right knock offs.

all the non-authorized sales support them to... do you think that people are stealing thousands of amplifiers from polk and selling htem on the net?
no - wholesalers buy them and then sell them however they please (which is probably a breach of their buying agreement with polk).

Well I dont know exactly how it works but I would think that if unauthorized sales supported the manufacturer just as much they would have disclaimers all over their websites stating that if you buy unauthorized theyll send somebody to your house to bust your kneecaps!

ya i'm not sure about it either, but i'm just thinking out loud i gues...
i mean... are these 'unauthorized' products stolen? I'm sure some are here and there, but I'd guess 90% of them are legit 'new in box' stuff.
so that begs the question, if they're unauthorized sellers, where did they get the stuff from?
is the product being fake-shipped? meaning, does authorized warehouse A order 5 trucks of polk speakers and they say "hey, we only got 4 trucks, where's the other one?!?" -- so then the 5th truck is written off on insurance when it actually did show up, and the warehouse A is selling it on the side to Joe Blow's car audio online store.
If that's the case, then I'd consider it stolen product.
But I would think that if it was happening enough to supply all these online unauthorized guys with product, then the manufacturers would have caught on by now... that's a TON of product to "misplace", "lose", or "be damaged in transit"... the insurance companies wouldn't stand for it.
I really always have wondered where these guys get their stuff...
the old stock and refurbs i can totally understand... MTX and Audiobahn willingly sell their refurbished stuff and old stock off to anybody who'll pay for it... and they give better pricing for bulk purchases... of course these products would only carry a 90 day warranty even if bought straight from the manufacturer, so the buyer isn't losing anything by having a 30 or 90 day warranty from Joe Blow's car audio.com ...
I dunno -- i'd really like to know where they get their gear for new / current product that is supposedly "new in box". because i've seen new in box shit... i have... i just don't know where they get it from...
