Since I'm on a mission to lose some excess tonnage, I've set up a recumbent excercise bike in my CD storage room, and have been scrounging around components to put together an audio system for it. The problem was what to use for speakers. The room is only about 8x10, so SDAs are right out. My Monitor 5Bs are destined for my office at work, and while I tried Monitor 10 Series 2, they're just too much for the room. That and they're too low to the ground (no stands).
So I stop by the local audio store today to get everything set up for a Dish HD upgrade I'm having done tomorrow, and while I was there I decided to take a quick look through their used audio equipment. What should I find there but an old pair of Monitor 7s! They're silver coil dome tweets, not the peerless tweets, darnit, but beggars can't be choosers. While the cabinets are a bit ratty, the drivers are in mint condition. Picked 'em up for $95. Not dirt cheap, but I'm willing to pay a bit extra to buy local and not deal with potentially disastrous shipping issues.
Hooked 'em up and they sound glorious! I still need to play a bit with toe-in to get the focus/soundstage right. The tweeters are a bit on the harsh side, so I may want to upgrade those. These puppies put out a very nice amount of bass for speakers their size.
Sitting them on top of the Monitor 10s puts them at the *perfect* height; when I'm sitting on the bike, the midranges are right at ear level. Egads, I'm using Monitor 10s as speaker stands... :D
