please do yourself a favor and contact gary Dodd about upgrading with platinum sonicaps, you can purchase them from danny richie at gr research. they are not listed on his site yet so you have to call. for the elp you will need two .01 uf platinum sonicaps $17 each.

Any particular reason why?

vocals are much more focused and the soundstage is expanded. you also notice more detail and overall smoother sound. we had a get together a couple of weeks ago where gary put them in a guys dodd refernce preamp and the difference(improvement) was quite evident.

Marvin stated that in his first post. He said we have to see Danny to buy the caps. :)

Hey guy's
you can call me for the values of caps needed, but you have to Call Danny at GR Research to actually purchase them. I do believe that they are around $17.00 each for the ones used in the preamps. My # 972 276 6865

I have one of the newer ELPs with the remote power supply and I got to say it amazes me how GREAT it sounds. I've only upgradede the power cord to a PS PowerPunch and WOW!
How many caps does the ELP have anyway?

Whao, you mean there's a newer version of the ELP that has an extenal power supply? You mean it has its own chassis? Cool. I don't know how many caps it has...but hopefully I will before too awfully long...

Of course, anyone can buy Sonicaps from the company that makes them, Sonic Craft. http://www.soniccraft.com/sonicap_platinum.htm

They may even try something really out of the box and perhaps unique....like Auricap, Dynamicap, Crescendo, Zen, Harmony, Cardas, Black Gate(Limited), etc etc...
Here's a little list of manufacturers for your upgrade pleasure... Capacitor Upgrades (http://ldsg.snippets.org/appdx-ec.php3#CAPRECS)

Do I sense here that Doro is actually starting to consider that capacitors upgrades do make a difference???? :) :)

I never said they didn't make a difference, but that they aren't a REQUIREMENT to upgrade an SDA or any older Polk Audio speaker specifically. It's fashionable now.
I have appreciated the sound created by the original manufacturing process of about 100 speakers, in-house. I guess I could have modified them all to suit me, or change them, but I chose to listen and value them upon their respective merits. How do you expect to get some head on high-fi if you're always changing what was done in the first place?
If I was listening to one speaker, forever, I would probably want to do something to that speaker eventually....and I'm not out of that ballpark, but it's certainly not top priority.

you may be too late for the improved dodd elp as gary is going to drop the three preamps he was making and only make one preamp, the new battery powered pre.

This is an old thread, but is there anyone here that has this particular upgrade(sonicap platinum capacitor) in their ELP or MLP? Just wondering what benefits were derived from doing so.

Okay,, I heard from Gary,,I still have a question or two regarding the ELP,,but for the MLP,,it boils down to he can do it for me,,or I can,if I so choose,,I believe that it involves replacing the caps in the MLP,, which means Two .22uF and One 1uF per side,, with Sonicap Platinums,,or I'm guessing that you could go high end boutique caps,if one had that kinda money. If I decide to replace em',I will most likely send it to Gary,as he has always treated me very well. The thought of replacing/upgrading the caps does sound appealing though.

anyone hear the new auricap teflon caps?
george daniel

heard about em',,,but not heard em.
Marvin,, I'm a little confused about the original post,,I come up with about 360.00 worth of platinums,, not the 17.00/cap,,maybe it's because it was the "reference pre" that the caps were added/in--to.Anyway,,according to Gary,a noticable difference/improvment can be heard.

i only had to two small plat. bypass caps put in, the original large caps that are in the elp are regular sonicaps. maybe gary is talking about replacing the large value caps with plats. and also using plat. bypass caps.

George, look at the date of the original post.
I did,,I think the issue is, at least for me,, recapping vs a additional bypas cap or two,, I just e-mailed gary, so hopefully will have an answer soon.I do know, that in his earlier e-mail,he is refering to "recapping" the MLP, which has two .22uf and two 1.0 uF caps total. But I think Marvin is speaking about the use of two bypass caps. Getting late,,for me anyway,,tomorrow folks--good night --george
