matching the rears to the fronts all that important

i have RTi12's front ,csi3 center, acoustic research 12in sub, but my 4 rears are yamaha ns-125, they seem to do the job but would it make a noticable difference with RTi4 or the FXi3. THANKS FOR ANY HELP.

I was in a similar situation as you. I purchased a pair of RTi4's and a CSi3 for my front stage. I kept my Sony satellites as the surround speakers.

Recently, I purchased a pair of FXi3's to replace them. It is night and day. For example, I tested this with Top Gun. As the jets flew from the back to the front or vice versa, the old configuration became very tinny and you could hear the difference between the old and the new FXi3's.

Now keep in mind that before I did the A/B testing with the two, I did not notice this difference. However, after doing the test, I would never go back and am now a strong believer in matching speakers.

It depends on how critical you are. To some it may not be that important. IMHO, I wouldn't have it any other way.

On the better soundtracks, there is alot of front to back action, you will notice the difference when they match. If you listen to multi channel music, it's a must.

Yes..There are a big difference. Yamaha speakers have superior quality than Sony, Panasonic, Pioneer, JVC (all the comercial brands) but compared to the "speaker brands" is very inferior.

If you buy a RTi4 or FX's for surrounds...you could feel the bigest difference. Try it. ;)

yes, matching fronts with rears is key. Perhaps not nearly so much as center with fronts, but a tonal match is important.
For instance, my system is currently comprised of rti10's and 2 r50 for surrounds. Using the Last of the Mohicans DTS sound track quickly uncovers a major tonal imbalance.

the only speakers i have that are matching standouts are the fx300i's. They do use a silk dome like the newer rti's, but they're 3/4" instead of 1". When put to the test, the 300's sound nearly identical with the rest.

If you have to use different speakers for any given position, then the rear surrounds in a 7.1 setup might be ok. Even in a 5.1 setup, all speakers need to timbre match.

If money is the only reason not to have matcing rears, then save and get the right rears down the road.

I don't like mis matched systems. Nothing more I hate when the rears have a different tone. It's distracting when it's way off. In some systems, different rears aren't as noticable. When you use 2 brands that are close in sound quality, you can get away with it. I have done systems with Polk rears and Boston fronts and it wasn't as bad as one would think. Actually unless you listened to something that moved around the room, you didn't really notice. But in this case, all the speakers where of the same quality just from different companies.

But there is no reason to own miss matched speakers in a home theater system. Why do it when the goal is to get the most out of the money you spent?

I used to have LSIs in the front, RTi100s as surrounds and Fxi30s as rears. Now I have LSi all around and it is a beautiful thing.

I have a small room and put Monitor 30 for surrounds and works great. Obviously, the FX's line is far better, but far expensive !!!! (maybe in the future I upgrade my system for FX's and RTi's .... :cool: Anyway, i very Happy with "Monitor Series" !!!!)
