I am eager to get into the analog world and am looking for a budget turntable to pair with my LSi9's. I currently have my sights set on a Pro-Ject 1 Xpression ($400). Any comments or recommendations? Is there a particular model that matches well with the LSi series?

Thanks everybody.

A turntable to match up with a certain pair of speakers.

Look what you guys have created.

What's wrong with that? Do different tables have different sound characteristics? Do some blend better/worse with certain speakers? As noted, I'm just getting into this--constructive help is appreciated.

$400 is a "budget" TT? You can get a damn nice TT for that money, especially used.

I think there is more of a potential synergy between the tonearm and the cartridge. The speakers and the turntable are pretty much independant if you ask me. There is a relationship between your amp/pre and the speakers that can't be denied, but I'd say just get the nicest TT/Cartridge combination for your money.

you can do used, but I also here that pro-ject is a very good turntable. I cant see there being a turntable that outright wont match with the LSi9. if it doesnt sound right, it woudl be some other reason. the match up should be fine

Also consider the Music Hall MMF 2.1 and the Goldring GR-1.2. Both can be had for $300 ±. The GR-1.2 is the better bargain IMO.

Yes it is.

Also true...but used TTs may be one of the biggest crapshoots in audio. More than any other piece of gear I would want to see it (looks and operation) before I bought it. For someone "new" to turntables, I would recommend one of the "budget" TTs already mentioned in this thread. Pretty much a plug-and-play entry into the new world of turntables with not a lot to go wrong.

Ok, just a difference of opinion on terminology. I would call the GR 1.2 and the others mentioned as "entry level" turntables, not budget. Hell, there is a cheap Sony that sells for $89, to me that's what I think of when the term budget is used.

FYI, there is a GR-1.2 Demo at Audio Advisor for only $244. Others who have bought the demos have said they are just like new. They usually don't stay around long for that price.

I agree that buying a used TT without seeing it is risky. Local deals are alway best for that.

Thanks guys. I saw that GR 1.2 and was tempted; however, the Xpression will be only $225 at a local shop after I trade in an old pair of speakers--I'm pretty sure I'm gonna pull the trigger.

I'm excited to get into vinyl, but have no idea what I'm doing. Sure is fun.

The Xpression is a really good table for the money. Especially if you can kill two birds with one stone by trading some unwanted speakers.

If you do end up just buying a table here is a list of ones to consider. Some of these have already been suggested by others.

Project Debut
Music Hall MMF-2.1 or MMF-5
Goldring GR 1.2
Dual CS 435
Thorens TD-158 or TD-170
Rega P2

I'm sure there are more in that range that I can't think of right now.

Welcome to the analog club! (evil laugh)

Accept my apologies Peter. There is no "synergy" between a turntable and a certain pair of speakers. The desire to own a good turntable is all the "synergy" you need.

No Max, I'm not sure it's good, no less great.

I've heard great things about Pro Ject. Other brands to look at would be Rega and Music Hall. Sorry, I don't know much about TT's. Just letting you know some brands that I've heard great things about.
