Your receiver needs to be able to handle it.

How much do you want to spend? What is the rest of your system?

<thinking out loud here>
I assume that the DTS DVD-Audio is output through the 6-channel analog connectors on the back of the DVD player. If so, then all internal processing in the AVR is bypassed. The only thing to display on the AVR is "6-channel input" or "Analog input" or whatever the Yammy reads out.

Try this.
Play a movie DVD with DTS and send the signal to the AVR through the analog connection, using the on-board decoders in the DVD player. Don't send the signal via coax or TOSLINK. The DVD player will read DTS but the AVR won't.

In short, I don't think anything is wrong with either of your pieces of gear. But I could be wrong.

Yeah, what neborjk said. You need to use your analog connection. Hopefully the Yammie has 6 channel inputs, or you're basically hosed.

if your DVD player has 6 analog outputs and your receiver has 6 or more analog inputs.. connect them.. to each other. and it should work then. that's the bad part of SACD's and DVD-audio. more cables needed just to listen to it. that's why both formats are dying off. and never caught on.

There are over 3000 sacd titles available and many many dvd-a. Have fun. You need that SACD/DVD-A player to really enjoy though them. Danger Boy has been exposed to the fog where he lives way to much plus he's had a very hard life. SACD is alive and well thanks to the folks who love music, Redbook is dying a slow death. Other new Technologies are close at hand. If they sound better than SACD I am all for it.

ok this may seem like a stupid question ... i have everything working but i don't understand why it works the way it does ... why are my movies able to play in dts through my optical cable and the dvd-a won't?

that's because DVD-audio was in it's inception only designed to work with 6 analog RCA cables.. not digital cables. it was years ago the way for SACD and DVD-audio formats to keep people from making copies of them.

thats one reason both formats struggled to gain popularity.. and just never caught on.

fastforward to today. a few brands of universial players such as Denon do allow you to hook their players to their Denon receviers using just one cable..

You have to check the disk. Some DVD-A are coded for DTS & some are not. For those coded for DTS it will play in DTS & sound great. If not, then just switch the receiver over to ext & play it that way.

Eagles: Hell Freezes Over & Queen's Night at the Opera rock in DTS.

While HFO will automatically default to DTS, NATO will not. I have to go into the disk menu & manually place it to playback in DTS.
