A slow day at school today, with spring break on beginning at sunset, so I've been reminiscing about some music I've owned(and will own again) over the last few years.
I'll show my age here and say a couple of bands I enjoyed in high school were Collective Soul and Cake. IMO, they don't really relate to each other, but I still enjoyed the music.
If you aren't aware, or don't remember, the title of this thread is from Cake's second album, Motorcade of Generocity. I don't remember how well this album was recorded because it was usually played on simple travel boombox systems anyway. This cd, along with several other Cake cd's, provided me with hours of enjoyment. Most generally, I bought cd's for one song, and only listened to that one song. This cd was different because I played it over and over and over without skipping a song. I bought the next couple of cd's and enjoyed them as well, but this one still remained one of my favorites. Over the years of moving and loaning cd's through high school and college, I don't have any of them now. Within the near future, I'm going to start rebuying them to re-enjoy them.
The second band I from the same period is Collective Soul. For some reason, I remember this album being did sound very poor. I liked the music, but the actual recordings left a lot to be desired. I might have my info wrong in part, but I think some of the songs were actually recorded in a garage or basement.
Collective Soul, the self titled album was much better. Precious Declaration was next, and provided several hours of listening enjoyment, but it was difficult to find their next cd, Dosage, as engaging. At the time, I might have been growing tired of hearing the same type of music rehashed over and over again. Or maybe, since Dosage was aimed at a little more band experimentation, it just left me longing for some of the same stuff. I haven't kept up with them recently, but I'm thinking of re-buying some of their old stuff, along with their newer ones to test them out.
I am faced with a dilemma about purchasing the old ones though, because, 7 Year Itch covers most of the stuff I enjoyed, so it would be an obvious choice. However, I also like some of the obscure songs on the whole cd's as well.
I did a search on "cake" and the main two references I ran across were the junk cd trade thread, where Russ was trying to get rid of Fashion Nugget, and a thread about being stuck on a desert island with only 5 cd's. In that thread, Fashion Nugget was one of woodyjacobs' favorites at the time.
Just goes to show how subjective music really is.
