on my H/K you can enable Dolby Virtual Speaker, which as Dolby claims simulates 5.1 with just two speakers.

However, there is also a Dolby VS Wide mode that can be used on top of an existing 5ch. configuration. Needless to say, I was very impressed. The volume was louder, clearer and the surrounds were noticeably more enveloping. MUCH better than plain Dolby Digital 5.1 for movies and just as good if not better than DTS.

Don't know if the 5ch. VS wide mode is available on receivers other than H/K though.
tried to google the 5ch. VS wide mode (still using 5.1 speakers) but got no results.
Has anyone tried this?

this new Outlaw Audio 990 pre amp has that feature too.. it's DD VS Wide+ or something like that. when i enable that.... i can't hardly hear the center channel anymore. strange beast.

that is strange. it actually boosts the volume of my center speaker by a few db. I'm not pleased with the straight up regular Dolby D. 5.1 on the H/K but the VS 5 spkr mode is really nice.

Is that feature only on the newer model H/K? I don't believe I have that on my 525.

bump. I just did another comparo tonight with an older DVD Crimson Tide- Dolby Virtual Speaker Wide (5 speaker mode) vs. Plain Jane Dolby Digital. There really is no comparison. In some ways, many ways, I enjoyed this 5.1 on steroids better than even Dolby Digital/Prologic IIx 7.1.

Has anyone tried this 5 speaker Dolby V.S. Wide mode since the newer receivers have now come out with the technology? Imo i think it's great, even when compared to 7.1.
