what do you guys know/think about the mtx thunder 6304 amplifier? Is it a good amp? how much should i expect to pay for one?

MTX amps are among the best on the market. Not too flashy and most dont have too many nifty features. However, what they do have is virtually indestructible build quality and the comfort of knowing that theyll faarrrrr exceed their rated power with ease. Cant go wrong with a MTX amp of any kind.

mtx makes great amps, nothing bad can be said about them. in my opinion the only reason im going with a polk c500.1 mono block amp is becuase i want all polk stuff in my car aside from the eq which will be either arc audio or audiocontrol. and the head unit which will be either eclipse or panasonic. but i had considerd an mtx amp it was just what i personally wasnt looking for

the Thunder 6304 runs very very hot.

All the amps based on the original 754 design have historically run extremely hot. This includes the Blue Thunder 75.4, Blue Thunder Pro 75x4, Thunder 304, and Thunder 6304.

You can expect in the range of 70 to 80 watts x 4 at 4 ohms and 14.4 volts... with around 275 x 2 bridged into 4 ohms.

What's it worth? (Assuming you are not trying to match it cosmetically with other amps or have an emotional attachment to it -- which makes any item 'worth' more money --- I'd pay triple something's value if it was essential to a project and I couldn't get it anywhere else).... all things equal -- its worth around 200 bucks new in box... 100 to 150 used in good condition. That thing is about 4 model years old, if not older.

Don't mount it in a confined space. Again, it runs very hot -- and on a really warm summer day, if you don't have AC or the windows down, it may likely go into thermal.

PBD, you say that the mtx amp runs hot, how do the orion amps run in comparison, particularly the 4002 or 3002? I'm only looking at powering 4 speakers rated at 100 watts max, so i dont need a ton of power. As far as location, the amp will be in a closed area will little ventilation. It's for a boat.

Let me know what you think about the other amps. I can pick the amp up for around $120-$140 bucks US, but i can get a new orion for about the same or something similar. Ideas are still up in the air since summer aint here yet.

Not much difference. Both MTX and Orion are freaking powerhouses thatll make plenty of clean power. Id give the edge to MTX due to their superior build quality tho but Orion is good too just for the coolness factor. Orion used to be legendary back in the early 90's.

Well... I've never run Orion so I honestly do not know. I do reccomend Orion amps to people from time to time because they're a name brand and come pretty cheap online lately.

Personally, I am very biased toward MTX... they are, and will continue to be, my amp of choice.

Not all MTX amps run hot... actually most do not - they typically run at the same temperatures as most other product. If you only need about 30 to 40 watts rms then I see no reason why you couldn't do an MTX Thunder 4244 / 404 / 204...

Here's a Thunder 404 on ebay for $130 --- Remanned in box... does 50 x 4 rms into 4 ohms.

And here's a phenominal Thunder 204 on ebay for $100 (bid) --- Used ... does 65 x 4 rms into 4 ohms.

For your speakers, at 100 watts peak, you really only need a 40 to 50 watt per channel rms amp. If you like MTX you'll find better deals and better quality looking into the older product or the very new higher end product. The recent low end stuff is nothing to write home about.

That being said, the Orion shouldn't give you any trouble either... but if I had to take two amps and throw them off a building and bet money on which one would still work, I'd take the MTX any day.

I would have no problem running that amp. I had the later line from MTX, a Thunder564 & Thunder801D, both were nice amps. They had strong clean output, and made a good amount more juice than what you paid for.
