so am i the only sucker that loses all his millions of custom settings on my avr-7300 whenever the power goes out? it's a long, complicated process to have to re-set up all of my options all the time. i'm gonna hate arizona's monsoon season when the power goes out all of the time!!!

Doesn't it retain the settings for a period of time ?

Have you ever thought of buying a small ups? They're not too expensive and would seem to save you a lot of hassel.

Mine does the same after about a half hour of power outage. I don't know if there's some internal battery that can be replaced so they retain settings for a longer period of time - it does seem silly. And it's super annoying, thank God my power doesn't go out more often.

the avr is less than a year old. brand new unit. power only goes out for like 30 secs at a time. thought about a battery backup type deal, only good for keeping power for momory when unit is OFF. may have no other choice.

APC s15.
Look it up on audiogon, a place caled American home theater or something like that sells them for $999.00.
It is supposed to condition and filter your power as well as provide battery backup.
I am seriously thinking about trying this out as soon as I can part with another grand.

for memory retention??? almost worth it!

It conditions your power plus helps with short term memory loss. :D

Odd how a good brand like h/k has dropped the ball on this aspect of their equipment. I have a cheapo entry level panasonic avr that I have had unplugged for a couple months now and when I tried it the other day it still had all my old settings. Weird

I agree, My onkyo saved it's settings after being moved from room to room.

there was a car wreck this morn and only knocked the power pole for a brief stint. right when i woke i heard my batt back up on the computer beep. right then i knew my avr was screwed. took a little bit this morning to even watch the news before heading out to work. power was lost for but 30 seconds at a time. spend a few thousand on a product, it should be capable of wiping its own ass!

My Marantz never lost it's settings. the few that it had anyways.
I don't know about this new Outlaw Audio pre yet. I hope it doesn't lose it's settings either. Although, it can be fun although time consuming to reconfigure everything again.

There is supposed to be a capacitor that holds the memory from things I've read and I've also read that HK had a bad run of capacitors and it's a known issue...that they'll fix.
Call up HK, they generally make good on warranty repairs.

to me, that sounds like more down-time. i hate that. but at least they're right up north from me in phoenix. still, sounds like down time. i feel more comfortable whining and bitching to you all than to deal with ups (devil) and deal with the down-time.

50 minutes later and still gold.
Perhaps you triggered the protect mode when your power was shut off, thus wiping out the memory in your AVR. Or as KingSqueak suggested, the memory capacitor.

I unplugged my H/K 635 for about 5 minutes and it kept all the presets. Strange...I may consider a small UPS in the future however.

If they are using a capacitor to save your settings, that is a pretty crappy design. All the capacitor should be doing is keeping the system clock going (if there is one). EEPROM should be storing all your setup information (doesn't lose its state when power is removed unlike RAM). Although if you don't implement the EEPROM correctly, the same thing can happen.
If they do just use a big cap, its probably just a cost cutting measure that has backfired on them. EEPROM is pretty cheap too, and you can get a bunch of different micros with EEPROM on the chip.

HK takes a long while for repairs. I had a 430 for a minute and it blew (never understood why). Took over 2 months to get it back and it never sounded the same IMO.

Sounds like a bad capacitor. See page 25 in the user service manual (this is the 7200 manual, but the 7300 is also listed in the memory backup tech bulletin):
http://manuals.harman.com/HK/Service%20Manual/AVR7200%20sm.pdf
Memory should last for about a month according to page 41 in the 7300 manual:
http://manuals.harman.com/hk/Owner%27s%20Manual/AVR%207300%20OM%20FINAL%20rev%206-3-04.pdf
Call HK for a capacitor replacement. They will fix it.

Not a problem with my Yammy. It has an option for 'Memory Guard'. I don't have a clue why you would want to turn it off. But I just checked, and it was turned off! :p
Well, I just looked up the "Memory Guard" in my users manual, and it actually appears that it 'locks' all the settings so they can't be accidentally changed by someone.
But I've still unplugged my Yammy several times and have never had a problem with losing settings.

I think the longest my power has went out since I've had my Denon would be 5-10 minutes and I was ok. That would REALLY suck if I lost all my settings...
Perhaps a decent UPS would help...

i guess it's a known issue. that's why their manual outlines the prob. okay, terrific. something that retails for over 2 grand and they can't fuggin' use decent capacitors in it to hold a few settings. brand spankin' new too.
