An Evening with John Petrucci and Jordan Rudess
You Dream Theater fans should recognize the names as the guitar and keyboards players for DT. But let me be clear up front, this CD is NOT Dream Theater, or even anything remotely close to that style.
For those of you not 'in the know':
John Petrucci is the guitarist for progressive rock group Dream Theater. He's a very technical player, comparable to the likes of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani (they've all toured together on the G3 tour). He's probably not quite as good technically as Steve, but he's really really close, and I find his style to be more melodic and easier to listen to - think Steve Vai combined with a more melodic player like Neil Schon (Journey and early Santana). John comes from the Berkeley school of music I believe.
Jordan Rudess is the keyboard player for Dream Theater. It's hard to describe his style - best way is think John Petrucci...on keyyboards. He's just very good, he comes from Juliard I believe.
So this CD is just these two guys jamming together in front of what appears to be a small to medium size crowd. It's about half acoustic and half electric. The acoustic guitar stuff is amazing, first I've really heard Petrucci do the acoustic thing, and he's really good at it, some of the stuff has a Tim Reynolds-ish sound to it.
These guys are absolutely phenominal, easily among the best musicians in the world on their instruments. I've shared this CD with several friends who have completely different tastes in music, and they all loved it. It's the perfect balance between melody and technical ability. These guys showcase their talents very well, but the songs also exhibit good melody - it's still of a progressive nature, but not the eclectic stlye you often get with really talented musicians. There's something here for everybody, it can be very easy to listen to or very engaging if you're into the technical side of things.
Anyway, you guys and gals should check this out. Head down to your local Best Buy or whatever and pick this up, it'll most like be in the Rock section with all the Dream Theater stuff.
