Bass test tones will be a warble tone and not a continuous single frequency. A continuous low frequncy test tone will cause damage to a sub. The on-board test tones used in most receivers/pre-amps are adequate for determining the peak bass set point.
As far as good music or movies, we've covered that one a number of times, use the SEARCH button and you'll find numerous threads on the subject. A couple that come to mind (just to get you started) U-571 (Depthcharge Attack) or Blueman Group DVD-A .

There are many CD's out there with test tones, one of them is BASS 305 Anthology (http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?pid=6828928&style=music&cart=325860208&BAB=E)

I use Darkcity soundtrack to test subwoofers.
It's an excellent recording with very well defined bass.
Another recording i use (actually 1 track)is bjork homogenic 1st track, hunter. lots of synthesized bass.
Yello one second is another great recording with lots of bass.
enjoy.
