So my brother in law is getting his act together and putting together a HT. He is currently debating getting the new SVS bookshelves for around $100 each, or getting Polk R15s for fronts and rear surrounds. Has anyone heard the SVS and familiar enough with them to compare them to the SVS bookshelves?

Out of the two...the SVS bookends. I've heard them a few times....

Close call, or no brainer difference?

I thought it was an impressive little speaker. The 5.1 setup @ CES was awesome. I've never heard an awesome R series.
I keep on meaning to get a pair for my computer, but I'm just lazy.

It was a nice entry speaker. That being said, the Onix X-series will dust it in short order. There's nothing on the planet for twice the price, that will do what they do.
Cheers,
Russ

Unless you can get some used Ref1s for around $400.... seeing as there is no end in sight for the value-losing AV123 speakers due to all of MLS' sales and promos.
No sh!t.. I got a pair of REF 1.5's on the way. Time to take em' for a spin to see what they are all about, they will arrive tomorrow.
Shiz,
I havent heard the SVS speakers. I can't comment there. I can comment on at least a proto XLS pair... They definately kick major tail.
That being said, I dont mind the R series for HT on the cheap.

I own the R15s and have heard the SBS-01s several times. The SVS speakers are better speakers...not lightyears better, but better.

Thanks Ron.
Talked to my broinlaw. He has a coworker that has the 5.1 SVS system. We are going to go up and take a listen this weekend, or sometime soon. I'll report back.
His name is Paul and he lurks around here. Maybe he'll man up, join and even post now and then.

Are the Ref series Onix speakers from AV123 on par with LSis?
I see they have some B-stock bookshelf Reference 1 Monitor speakers for about the same price as slightly used LSi9s.
Going to buy some bookshelf speakers for 2 channel set-up in coming months, looking for good "value" options.
Andy,
I am listening to the Ref 1.5's. I have a pair of LSi-15's downstairs. Honestly, I prefer the Polks at this point.
Joey,
Call me. I will say this much, the Totems are making pretty quick work of the Ref's thus far.

I bought a pair of the SVS's for grins when they were running their intro special. Nice build, decent sound. All-in-all, a good first effort.
I'm looking forward to the towers that are to follow.
And now I'm looking forward to hearing the Onix line as well... It just never ends....
Ain't it cool?

The next stop is the mid-line bookend. We saw the prototype at CES this year. It was using an aluminum, Vifa type tweeter. Ron mentioned that the crossover points were rough and not ironed out...and it sounded like it, but it looked nice.

Just a quick update. The SVS bookshelf speakers clearly have the edge over the Polk R series.
