What a bad idea....

So I got home from school yesturday and I start setting up the electronics. I just throw together the reciever and a single sony speaker to listen to some tunes while I sort cables and whatnot and all was well.
I got just about everything done and go to hook up speaker wire for the other channels on the reciver, forgetting I was already listening to music. I sure you know what happened next....

Damn thing went into protection mode, so I turn it off, wait a few minutes and turn it back on....works alright. So I pop in the new tool cd (still only running the right channel with a speaker, right is on but has nothing attached)...everything is ok so far. So I turn it up a bit.....shit, protection mode again.

I turned off the left channel and everything is good. I kept the left channel on and just took out the speaker wire and everything is still good. So I pretty much just narrowed it down to an issue with only that channel...but I just need to know if there is something I can do to fix this, because I have 0 money for quite a while. This whole college thing takes way too much money.

Im running a Kenwood vr-705 with rti4's if that helps any. Yes I know the avr is awful, but its what I have until I can get some money.

Make sure no speaker wire is touching i.e no single strands peeking out of the + and touching the - or any connection between the left and right chennels. That will turn the avr into protection mode.

Thanks. I checked and there were no strands that I could see touching.

It does physically work, it just cant be turned up loud enough. For example at -50db is fine, I will slowly turn it up from there and it is fine until it gets to about -38db then it clicks off. Usually the same spot every time.

unplug any speaker or speakers you have connected. then do the same thing .. turn the volume up. see what happens.. if it goes into protect mode again.. there is something internal that is causing it to go into protect.

if not. then it may be your sony speaker or speaker wire.. in which case. replace both..

Wow. I switched out the cable with the one that was hooked to the functioning channel and all the issues went away. I just trashed the old wire and got a new one real quick.

Don't really know why that would happen, but it worked so I'm not going to question it much. Thanks a ton.

Glad someone else said it.

Same goes for power conditioning, speaker wires and video cables.

One larger piece within the center of what philes post as sub standard makes all the difference in the world, OK!!

That's odd but glad you got things fixed. You probably just had a short somewhere...

I think it may have been a strand from the +/- being frayed at the speaker end so when there was enough power it would short out.

One more reason I need to get some real speaker wire.
