A near disaster averted

Last Friday, as I was in the shower, my girlfriend burst in and told me the water filter attached to my water tank had exploded and water was leaking everywhere. I got out of the shower to find about 30 gallons of water buidling up on the floor and heading towards my stereo! I quickly shut off the pump and began toweling up as much water as possible, but the carpet started to get soaked and the water edged ever closer to the speakers. I shut off all power and got everything off of the first floor. One of my new speaker cables was slightly damp, but other than that, the system was fine. I unplugged everything and made sure the cables were all dry before finally setting everything up again yesterday afternoon. Everything played wonderfully, but man was that scary. I got homeowners insurance this morning!

Damn, just think if that sucker had popped while you were gone???

This is a good time to remind people that have their washing machine on the same floor as the house (slab construction), to shut off the water supply valves when your not using your washer. Especially if you don't have stainless braided hoses.

We had some neighbors that did not shot off the high pressure hoses to their washing machine and went on vacation. When they got back there was water leaking out of the doors everywhere. Just imagine turning a garden hose on full blast in your living room for 3 straight days...... oooh thats scary.

I was freaking out. That stereo is the closest thing I have to a child! Sad but true.

I had a similar close call, only it was about $15,000 worth of musical instruments!

Best money I could have spent, and I'm not heating water that I'm not using, saving alot of money on the gas bill!

(edit) ooops, just realized you weren't talking about a water heater, but it's still something everyone should look into.

I had something almost like this happen to me about a year ago, I was watching T.V. about 1:30 am and started hearing something that sounded like somebody peeing in the carpet, I looked around like WHAT THE HELL IS THAT? and soon after I found it, the 55 gal aqurium that me and my wife bought 2 months earlier was leaking in the back corner, the aqurium was about 9ft from all my HT gear and tv, I started to panic and by the time I had got over to check out how bad the leak was the entire bottom seal of the aqarium gave out and the thing was leaking around the bottom. I got my wife to wake-up by screaming THE AQURIUM HAS JUST EXPLODED! she jumped up and we started grabing jugs to scoop the water out and we drained a 55 gal aqurium in about 10 min luckly we got it drained before the water spraed out to far, only about 2 ft around the bottom of the stand, I was just glad I was awake I would hate to think how bad it would have been if hadn't. I leard my lesson the hard way now the smaller tank we got to replace the old one is now in a room on the other end of the house.
