Question about Hi Def local OTA signal with Onkyo 898 AVR. I'm watching The Tonight Show right now and DD 3/2.1 will only give L/R speakers nothing center or rear surrounds. My audio signal back to my AVR is by an optical cable out via TV itself.

Well it's all DD the show it self is DD 3/2.1 so think DD5.1 // commercials DD 2/0 or 2/1 works fine as the receiver then decodes as Pro logic II movie. I never had the problem using my DirecTV box when I watched a movie and it showed DD I could 5.1, but local Hi Def using ant just 2 channel.

OK to put it another way right now I'm watching "Live with Regis and Kelly" as ant local Hi Def audio is by optical digital out feeding AVR. Sounds is ok as this is really not 5 channels per say but is sent as PCM K so AVR does PLII movie just fine.

I'm starting to think it's really 2 channels sent as 5.1 messing up AVR, any fixes is another tuner better like Directv recorder HD box?

Steve.......
I seen the same problem with an installation I did a while back. w/ a Mitsubishi built in Tuner. It didnt' pass DD for whatever reason. I didn't trouble shoot it to far. But there might be a setting in the TV Audio Menu to pass PCM or DD. But he liked the idea that the DirecTV "Adv. Guide" also had the OTA information on it. So we just ran the SAT and OTA antenna into the DirecTV box, and then out to the reciever. This is also how I have mine set up, and I get DD in all its flavors (5.1/ 2.0 etc.) w/ out any problem.

Scott,

What you're using for a DirecTV box? What model?

Update the "Tonight Show" NBC (OTA) is transmitted DD5.1 shows DD 3/2.1 really just F'd up 2 channel that my Onkyo says DD5.1 screw you I wouldn't do anything with that you send 5.1 in you get 5.1 out. So this is better using RCA L/R out from TV, the David Letterman show CBS is transmuted DD 2/0 which works fine L/R or optical DD as this will be converted to Pro logic II Movie working all speakers. Sweet :D

I am using the Hughes HR10-250....I read your other post above but had a somewhat difficult time deciphering it. So are you good now?

Sorry Scott and others,

The optical audio output works all the time, but some shows which are sent DD 5.1 are not. Where these should be sent as DD 2.0, when this occurs I use the analog L/R outputs instead. I have to find a HD DD5.1 show to see if DD5.1 is really there.

Well then, you have found a fix for your problem. I don't even run my analog audio output to my receiver from the SAT Receiver. I run the analog outs to the TV input only. The only audio output I run to the receiver is the optical. I have the SAT receivers Audio set up for DD out, and my receiver takes care of all the switching needs. If the show is DD 2.0 you still should get sound out from your optical cable.

All shows that are HD don't necessarily output 5.1, I see you have found this out....

Scott,

Funny with my DirecTV TiVo SD recorder I run the optical also and I don't have a problem Sweeeet. But with local OTA HD I did :)
