I am yet to receive my Samsung HLS6188W and I will be using the CableCard for HD channels. How would I get 5.1 surround out of the programming since I won't be using a converter hd box
Yes...your tv should have a optical output that connects to your preamp/receiver.

If it has cable card then it has a optical out on the back of the set, you would use that to get your surround sound.

I called Samsung earlier and they said that i needed to run analog cables from the tv to receiver. This don't sound right to me. It does have an optical port on the back of the tv.

Learning myself here also, but I think it maybe a nice option for RCA analog R/L for does 2.0 shows. This is what I plan to do Optical and R/L in changing audio mode when to need arise.

That's OK as optical audio out isn't 100% perfect. IMHO

I will only use my surround sound for hd channels, i will use the regular tv speakers for normal cable.

I haven't used my regular TV speakers for anything. // Prologic II all the way.

But having said that some of mine Local HD channels are in DD5.1 format using 2 channel only, completely messing up my AVR as I get 2 channel only not even so so 5.1. So I think 2 channel is better for this occasions.

your receiver can't automatically switch between DD and DDPLII?
at least that's what I think is what's happening on mine

Well it can if done with the optical input, but what I'm saying is that DD 5.1 input wasn't DD5.1 at times but just 2 channels L/R. So the reciever say's OK DD5.1 I'm "Done" 5.1 in 5.1 out. So when the local channels / shows mess up I need to go the analog input so my center channel / rear speakers are working.
