Just brought home a nice pair of Buggtussel Somu speakers for my HT fronts.
These three-way speakers stand at 47.5 inches tall, they have a 91 dB sensitivity, and go down to 25Hz. Each speaker has one Vifä one inch dome tweeter combined with twin Vifä 6" mids and a pair of Peerless 8" woofers, all covered with a real wood veneer. They employ a modified transmission-line venting system. These Buggtussels definitely provide high-end performance at a low end price.
I opened her up and checked out the crossover. It is attached to the bottom of the speaker, so I couldn't take pictures, but it appears to have good quality components.
OK, so how do they sound? AWESOME!! These are, by far, the best fronts I've ever had. They smoke the Soliloquy 5.3's I used to own and the RTi10's don't stand a chance. Got these for a fraction of the price of the Soliloquy's. The Buggs are far more dynamic than anything I've heard on my system. Real world sound, baby. Oh yeah!
Gonna play around with them some more this weekend, but my first impression is very, very positive.
Pics are below. One of the midrange driver's dust cap is smashed in, but I don't think it affects the sound.

Very nice--they look great! I'm glad they sound on par with their looks.
Say, wasn't Buggtussel where Jed Clampett found the bubblin' crude when he was out one day shootin' at some food? :D

I'm speechless.
I popped in a couple of CDs just for the hell of it and I was absolutely blown away. The room became filled with impressive detail and clarity. The emotion was there, no hint of brightness, instruments sounded fairly natural, more bass, increased height, etc.
Keep in mind I'm playing music through a DVD player and a receiver (yuck). Nevertheless, it sounded so good that I am contemplating dismantling my 2-channel rig and consolidating both systems. By selling off a few things, this would allow me to upgrade our TV to a 50 incher with cash left over. I'd keep the tube CDP, though.
Damn, damn, damn.

Took another peak inside. Since the two rear ports are not glued, I simply pulled them out. Got my flashlight and noticed a couple of things. First, these speakers are obviously hand built. Not everything lines up perfectly, so it doesn't have the assembly line look to it. I like that. I wonder if the designer himself, Dr. Kevin Blair, actually made these speakers. According to the serial number, mine are #55.
Second, I'm not sure what the cabinet is made out of. I thought it was standard 3/4" MDF, but the inside of the cabinet looks just like the outside -- real wood veneer. Same color and texture. The cabinets are unfinished. The seller told me I could apply a stain directly to the speakers, but I don't know enough about wood and stain to feel comfortable doing that. Since I plan to keep these for a while, I'd eventually like to stain them to be a few shades darker so they'll blend better with the décor, if possible.
Third, the midrange drivers are sealed in their own box inside the cabinet. Took off the drivers and noted the model numbers: Vifa tweeter (TC20TD05-06); Vifa midranges (TC18WG49); and Peerless woofers (831709). As I mentioned before, the crossover components appear to be of very good quality (huge inductors). The crossover is not soldered to the drivers or to the binding post.

Wow. Those look very nice, and from the specs and your thoughts, it sounds as though they sound really nice, too. Congrats.

Just hooked up the Jolida int. amp and tube player to the Buggs. Sounds great. Very spacious, of course. Not quite as good as my 2-channel system, but it's at about 98%. The 2-channel system is slightly more detailed. That's it.

I has some Circa bookends for awhile on my computer....it's a really smooth sounding speaker. I'm a sucker for a good bookshelf.

Hey, try double sided tape, or use a vaccume cleaner to CAREFULLY pull out the dustcap. Should work easily, use your finger on the side of the vac tube to make sure it doesnt pull to hard. Good luck! They look awesome!

Very nice! Keep seperate systems though. I killed myself trying to make two systems out of one.
