View Full Version : Prayers needed...Time for this to end
I hope. I've been really dizzy the last couple of months. Turns out that it's a condition called bppv or positional vertigo. I've been dealing with it for the last 8 or 9 years (off and on) and it was pretty stable until about two years ago. I went in for treatment then and it went away but now it's back.
Going in for treatment today. It's going to suck cause they have to iduce it several times until it fatigues. I have to kick this things teeth out and shove 'em down it's throat! Wish me luck everybody!

I've been knocked out going on 9 days with similar stuff (I couldn't even open my eyes on Sunday or I'd ralph). Good luck, fortunately mine ended up being a viral infection and is fading. I have major sympathies and best wishes headed your way.
For those of you who have never had something like this, go pound a couple cases of beer in an hour or two and then imagine feeling that way for weeks at a time. Its not cool at all.

Wow, good luck man, everything will work out ok, you'll see.
I have slight problem with my right ear. It happened while hiking through the forest, a branch snapped back and whacked my ear. It actually blew the ear drum and I went to the hospital cuz it was bleeding.
I hear distortion at certain frequencies.....things like clapping or a group of people singing happy birthday causes distortion only in the right ear.
Thanks to everyone for the prayers and well wishes. :)
I just got back home. It (the treatment) wasn't as bad as I remembered it but it wasn't a picnic either. Got a ways to go but the first step is over. Seems that it is mostly in my right ear (last time it was in the left).
My MS is a big contributor to the problem also.
They are really great therapists and I think that is going to make it easier to get through.
Other people have described their experiences and I might as well tell you what it feels like to me:
When you were a kid did you ever stick out your arms and spin while standing in one place? When you stopped everything kept spining and eventually stopped right?
When this comes out I'm at a full throttel spin within a second or two which increases speed to the point where you feel like your head is a piston being (physicaly) slammed harder and faster with each revolution until it deceides to fatigue. There is nothing you can do to control it - that's probably the scariest thing about it.
Thanks again everyone! Please keep me in mind as I've got a long way to go and many excercises to get through before I'm out of the woods.

Did you have vision crap going on as well? That's the part the really messed with my head was looking at the world through a kaliedascope.
Pretty nasty crap and you totally feel helpless. Hope the exercises help.

The excercises can knock it out permanently but in my case it needs to be repeated periodicaly.
According to the therapist I've got more than just the bppv going on though. My eyes don't always track properly - they kind of jitter (I can feel the left one doing it when it happens). Sometimes it comes out when I'm reading - that "type" of vertigo is most likely related to MS. If I close my eyes when it's "active" it actually spins more.
Thanks again for the support everybody - it helps a lot :)

Congrats Vic.
Exactly what is involved in treating this? Physical techniques? Type of operation?
danger boy

that is good news... keep up the good work.. hope you improve more and more each day.
Exactly what is involved in treating this? Physical techniques? Type of operation?Yes its physical. You lay on a therapy table with your head hanging / free floating off the table (the therapist is actually holding your head level at first) while you look up at the ceiling. They turn your head to the right first see if it induces vertigo. They lower your head further and further until the vertigo induces, if it hasn't already done so. Once it (vertigo) starts they hold you steady until it fatigues. Then they continue to slowly lower your head until it's fully extended (pausing if vertigo starts). Repeat the procedure for the left side. Usually only one side will induce vertigo. Then you roll your body to the left until your looking at the ground. They held me there for about 15 seconds and waited to see if the position induced vertigo (it didn't for me). Last thing they do is sit you up and, again, see if vertigo starts (didn't for me in that position either).
Affter you relax for a minute or two they do it all over again.
Since it was in my right ear they said I shouldn't sleep / lay on my right side until I came in again.

Wow. I've never experience this vertigo or probably anything like it, but having it purposely induced like that until it fatigues itself can be quite stressful, I'd imagine.
Glad you're doing better with it!

Hopefully you'll be back on your feet in no time.
H9We're working on that too! ;) :)
Just an update:
Been through two more rounds of therapy and things went pretty well on the 2nd visit - they couldn't induce vertigo (even though they tried). I'm thinking  problem fixed.
Before I left I mentioned that they didn't try to induce it in the positions I normally avoid because of the vertigo. Therapist said I should go home and try to induce it myself in those positions I'd been avoiding.
She and I were under the impression that the problem was fixed. It wasn't :( As soon as I laid flat on my back with my head turned sideways and then I turned my head to look straight at the ceiling BANG! I get vertigo.
Went in today. Told them what happened. We try to induce the one we "fixed"...nothing :) Then we tried the thing I did at home...you guessed it - vertigo. So we kept repeating the position. Each time we did it the vertigo fatigued more rapidly.
They are perplexed as to why it's still coming out. They want me to keep repeating the positions at home until, hopefully, it fatigues permanantly.
That's where I'm at everybody. Thanks again for all the support :)
