Has anyone heard of the CREEK EVO CD Player?

Hi,

I have been looking for a CD player for less than $1K to go along with my current 2-channel setup (Krell 400Xi and B&W 804s). My dealer suggested the following 2 CD players:

1) Rega Apollo

2) Creek Evo-C

He said that the Rega was more laid back & a little more natural sounding, while the Creek Evo-C was more detailed, more bass punch, & a little brighter.

i've never heard of the Creek Evo before but the description seemed quite good.

I've also heard on this forum that the RCD-1072 CD player is one of the best CD player under $1K along with the Arcam CD 73

The problem is that the dealer is located too far for me to go and listen and hence I just need to pick one and order it.

I haven't had any experience with Creek myself, but everywhere I ask/read about Creek, it seems pretty universally agreed that Creek is overpriced and not quite up to snuff. However, it may very well be worth looking into, as that's just what I've heard, and your ear might hear it differently.

However, I'd still say go with the RCD-1072. ;)

Damn it Michael. I hate to get on your case here but you gotta refrain from responding to a thread just to respond. You have no experience with the Apollo, 1072, or the Creek. All you have is third party "knowledge". You're not helping anyone here, yourself included.

Oh, I got a good idea. How 'bout everytime you move a piece of gear, you let it come through here first, that way I'd gain a ton of experience with everything!

The 400XI can be shrill, especially on metal dome tweeters found in your Beemers. An ideal source in such a system would be a player that is more catered towards smooth / rolled off response vice a critical "tell it like it is" player. Its that old "too much of a good thing......" adage.

Yeah, I've heard that as well. Which is why I thought that the Rega might be a good bet. The problem is that I've heard a lot of <$1K CD players such as the ROtel RCD-1072, Rega Apollo, Rega Jupiter, Music Hall and Cambridge Audio. Out of these I liked the Rotel a lot better than the Music Hall & Cambridge audio. I liked the Rotel better than the $4000 Krell CD player because, as you said Zero, the sound was too "tell it like it is", too bright.

I might have to do an A-B comparision between the Rotel and the Rega Apollo.

The review on the Creek was impressive and I haven't heard of a sub-$1000 cd player that has a balanced circuit and balanced outputs. However, the fact that it is a little bright might be a bad thing for my combo.

Some say that the Arcam CD 73 is the best sub-$1000 CD player. Man, this is tough!!!

I've even considered the Olive Musica/ Symphony music server but I have a feeling that the soundstage and over sound quality might not be as good as a stand alone CD player - specially in the sub-$1000 price range.

It's simple -- go with what you know. You said you liked the Rotel (even better than the $4K Krell!), so go with the Rotel and don't look back.

Before you buy the Rotel, give the Arcam a listen. You have to at least hear the Rotel's top competitor before you buy it. I love my Arcam CD73.

I was having a hard time finding an Arcam dealer nearby but finally found one - and they carry the Rega as well! Looks like I'm in luck!
