Stupid question, of which I am 99% sure of the answer...

Is a pre-amp necessary, if you're only using one source (e.g. a CDP) and analog IC's?

Unless your source has it's own volume control, it's good to have one if you like to control the volume.

Other than volume, would it serve any other function? If the CDP's DAC is running with the ball....

(and I won't lie to ya, I hadn't thought of volume)

Kinda depends on the situation and what you want. No, a preamp is not necessary if you're not wanting to switch between sources. However, you also won't be able to adjust the volume. Unless, of course, your CDP has a variable output.

Some amps have level controls as well, Parasound for one....

It can be done if either the source or the amp have a level control. It also sounds extremely neutral. I ran my system like this for about 8 days while waiting for my preamp. Bit of a pain though, as my parasound level controls are on the back of the amp.

FYI...Sony ES cd players have remotely controlled variable output so you do not need a preamp....
