The Who to tour after nearly 25 years 1 hour, 52 minutes ago

NEW YORK - It's been almost 25 years since the Who blasted their way through a major concert tour, so they should be ready. This fall, they'll give it another go, band members Pete Townshend and Roger Daltrey announced Thursday.

Opening date will be Sept. 12 in Philadelphia.

The legendary band will then wind its way through the U.S. and Canada before jumping next year to South America, the Far East, Australia and Europe.

North American destinations include New York, Chicago, Boston, Detroit, Seattle, Portland, Ore., Vancouver and Toronto.

The Who will perform songs from their upcoming album, "Wire and Glass," which will be released Oct. 23. It's the group's first studio recording since 1982's "It's Hard."

"I don't think I've ever looked forward to a tour as much as this one," Townshend said. "Roger and I are both fit and well, ready to rock."

Daltrey said he and Townshend plan to perform "some rarities that we've not played for a long time." They will be joined by keyboardist " /> John "Rabbit" Bundrick, bassist Pino Palladino, drummer Zak Starkey and singer-guitarist Simon Townshend.

Tickets go on sale for the public July 17. Who fan club members can pre-order tickets through Saturday night.

Wow, has it been that long. I seen them at the L.A Coliseum during the last tour. Shows my age. Should be a great show though.

Sisn't they stop touring after the riot in Cincinnati? Plus they couldn't find anyone crazier than Keith Moon. He was crazier than a shit house rat. Great entertainment. Roger and Pete are looking a little old. I doubt Roger can sing with that wonderful voice he used to have.

way back in ...... 76, 77 ? At ODU, in Virginia.

LOUD, the way it should be.

Doubt Pete will be able to jump as high during "Baba O'Reily", but it should be an interesting concert.

Didn't the Who play in Chicago in the late 80's to early 90's? Am i losing my mind?

I think they played at that live thing for food last year in Wembley Stadium.

I saw them play in northern Virginia in the 90's. Excellent as always.

Why is this news? The WhoRES have been touring a lot the last 7-8 years. Trying to cash in. Remember John Entwistle (the OX) died and they replaced him right in the middle of the tour a few years ago. Very tacky if you ask me. Also they've used a few drummers over the years to try to take Mooney's place most recently it was Ringo's son Zak Starkey. They are has been's who really aren't anything like they were.

Have you actually seen them play lately? They still rock out, IMO.

In all honesty no......I'm sure they do rock out. I am just against their whole attitude the past times they've toured. In interviews, etc., one gets the idea it's simply for the cash and not so much for the enjoyment or the fans. The whole replacing of the OX in 2002 ? I thought was very distasteful and showed the money was the motivating factor.

They just rub me the wrong way much like the Stones. I was going to try to see the Who before Entwistle died and was floored by the $275 ticket price, that was the cheapest (no tix broker involved). I've heard Townsend talk about how the Who never got the respect or made the money Led Zeppelin did in the day, and to me they are just doing it for as much money as possible; which is their right, but I don't want any part of it.

That's because they didn't have Peter Grant at the helm and they just weren't as good, imo of course.

Right On ;) . Typical case of sour grapes. Perhaps they should tour under the name Sour Grapes -featuring 2 former members of the WHO.

P.s. I do throughly enjoy Live at Leeds.

I'm not saying that the Who weren't a great band, but even they didn't want to come out on stage after LZ(New Yardbirds) opened for them, early on in their career. Remember, it was Moon that said they would go over like a lead zeppellin.

The Who are (were) my favorite R&R band, and I think Townshend is one of the great R&R songwriters (and, frankly, guitarists, to my taste). However, I cannot get excited about Townshend and Daltrey flogging 30-year-old memories. The Who were Moon, Entwistle, Daltrey & Townshend. The tension and angst between (some of) them was what gave the band its power. The cool thing about the Who was that they turned the rock-band ethos inside-out: Townshend provided the rhythm, and Moon & Entwistle played melody! Listen to Kenny Jones era Who... they sound like everybody else (more tired than everybody else, in fact), even with Entwistle.

Sorry, just cannot get too excited about this one.

The WHO had their place and were undeniably a powerful force in music at that time. One of the classic bands, but their reign was very short IMO. I have some very old 8mm footage of Mooney on stage with Zep in '77 at the LA Forum and he's hilarioulsy drunk at the time giving a speech and sitting in with Bonzo for the encore. CLASSIC Moon!!!

I have no problem with classic WHO, it's just the whole make as much money as possible attitude and price they get. FYI, the last time they toured Bill Cherbishley was their manager the same person who conviced and orchestrated the Page/Plant reunion and tour. I don't recall them charging astronomical prices for their concerts; and if anyone could have it would've been them. P/P also turned down 10 million dollars to reunite and tour in the late 80's.

Love or hate the direction Robert Plant has taken his solo career he has done it to play and write the kind of music he is comfortable with at this time in his life, not for commercial success or noteriety. The Stones and the WHO just cycle out the same bland reconstituted watered down tunes as usual.

Bottom line is people have and will pay those prices to see the WHO so it'll be a big success. It just won't be my money going to them.

FWIW here's the link from youtube.com.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEp3gnsUek4

It's easier to link this than to make a video capture of my copy. This is long over 9 minutes and Mooney doesn't come on till the end at about the 6 minute mark. It's a chopped and spliced low quality amatuer footage of clips from the 6-23-77 LA Forum show.

Caution: Dial-up members be aware this is a long streaming video.

Sorry if this is considered a high-jack, I think it's somewhat on topic. :D
