I've been running all day trying to help you Philadelphia folks keep talking on your Sprint Nextel phones. By that I mean I'm deploying generators and tracking commercial power restoration....it's so much F'n fun.
The Quality Inn in Maple Shade is where the housed me for tonight....where's are the good spots at? This place sucks.
This whole no left turn crap is absolute BS and Mark is officially taking matters into his own hands on that subject.
Cya later...George...where are ya? I know you're close...

Head down to Phila right over the Ben Franklin to 2nd and Chestnut (and vicinity), old city area. Lots of good joints. Kyber Pass is a great spot for local bands and great beer selection.

Probably thinking of Pats "King of Steaks" and Geno's Steaks, both in S. Philly around 9th and Warton near Passyunk Ave. Two classic Philly cheesesteak joints and worth the trip just for the "experience" but the steaks aren't as good as other spots. I personnally like Jim's on South street or even better Dalesandros in Roxborough.
Also check out the Reading Terminal market in general. Huge open market under the old Reading train station anround 11th and Market. All kinds of food. Great experience.

Doro- Just re-read your opening post. Hope you can improve the Nextel service in the Philly area. When I go back down there, my Cape Cod Nextel service sucks. I don't get calls, voice mails often don't go through etc. even when I'm in areas with strong signals:confused:

Go to a place called The Jughandle Inn in Cinnaminson. It's right down Rt73. Bring cash, they don't take plastic. No left turn there though, you gotta take a jughanle to get to the Jughandle. If you need directions, ask the desk clerk at the hotel, they should know where it is.
Get yourself an order of 10 wings hot and 10 wings garlic. Grab a Yeungling and soak up the "atmosphere". They got some of the best wings in the area and the people are nice too.
If you are looking for something less American, there are several places to eat with a more ethnic flair. There is a Japanese place called Akira in Mt. Laurel, they are in the phone book. There is a Mexican place call El Azteca down 73 in Mt. Laurel too. There is also F&M Deli (Jewish/New York Style Deli) which is a must go for lunch. Spectacular food, even better people! Hands down my favorite place for lunch. That's on Chruch St in Mt. Laurel. There is Montesini's for pizza and cheesesteaks on Rt 38 in Moorestown, not too far from Maple Shade. Depends on where you are working though I guess.
You could always hit the Hooters and there is a local chain called P.J. Whelihan's. They are actually considered Maple Shade and over by the Moorestown mall, not too far from where you are staying. Also at the mall is Bertucci's. That's a good brick oven pizza place. There is also Sal and Joe's Spaghetti and Pasta house. They are reaking spectacular but they can get crowded quick. They are open lunch and dinner.
There are way too many places in Philly to list.
If you want to hang with George, he's about 4 or 5 exits up I295 North IIRC.

Geno's is on one corner and Pat's is across the street from it. They are on 9th and Passyunk where 9th crosses Wharton and Passyunk Ave. I'd recomend Geno's over Pat's but I still maintain that both are for tourists. However Geno's has the "Sign read 'round the world." Stating that customers should order in English.
I do believe that both are open 24 hours.
If you go a "Steak 'wit" is a steak with onions. A Steak whiz wit is a steak with onions and cheese whiz. A Steak, provolone wit is a steak with Provolone cheese and onions. A Steak whiz witout is a steak with cheese whiz and no onions. Get it straight or you gotta go to the back of the line. Mind reading is 50 cents extra.
Here's a primer:
http://www.patskingofsteaks.com/order.htm
Don't worry, it pretty much goes for both of them.
In fairness, here's Geno's site too:

Have fun!

George is off Exit 5 on the NJTP....There is a corresponding I-295 exit but I don't know what it is.
On your way to G's....get off exit 5, make a right. Take a left at the intersection with McD's (Woodlake Ave, IIRC)...follow that to Russo's Pizza and grab a pie. The scenery in there is usually first rate as well.

I'm on the Sprint side, so I can't help you much. The only way to get issues like that addressed formally is to complain thru customer service. I knwo it sucks, but that's the only way to get a trouble ticket generated and feet on the ground. I know that we are required to respond to formal customer complaints within 24 hours...meaning, I'm in front of your house making test calls.
I don't promise anything, but that's your only recourse.

got to Philly, south street. Many things to do and plenty of hot women. Jims steaks is on 4th and south , right across the street is Star Bucks. China Town is off 10th street and if your into Chinese food/women, plenty there to choose from.
Thats if your still here in Phila. I only live 20 minutes from South street . I'm just north of the city.

Filthy has the dumbest AND the ugliest people in the lower 48.

Dan, Filthy is a joke of a major metropolis, and I always crack up at how they compare themselves to New York, Paris, and a host of other places that actually have some class. I've been getting around quite a bit for the last 30 years, and filthy doesn't even stack up to places like Des Moines.

You're kidding! Really?
I was just there like 2 weeks ago. Frank made my steak. Frank is Harry's son. Harry was there every day up until a few years ago. In fact, I think it was the year I graduated. He was in his mid 80's when stopped. Harry told us he was gettin' too old and Frankie could handle the store so he was retiring. He still made it up every so often.
Dang, that's a local legend passing right there. Godspeed Harry!

There is no better place on the planet to get a Cheesesteak. Jim's on 4th and South is the place to get it. There are a few that claim to be the best but the top 3 are the top 3.

Couple comments since I grew up near Philly...
1. Jughandles and traffic circles are the most idiotic things I have seen on the road. Only in NJ have I seen major roads with both. What schmuck invented them??
2. There are some good looking women in Philly, but overall, they're on the larger side. Compare South Street to the happening areas in DC, and there's a huuuuugggggggeeeeee difference. And if you've been to So Cal, there's a big difference between DC and there (for the good if the girl isn't full of silicone and other foreign objects).
3. George, I think you're going a little bit far with your description of Philly. Yea, its not the prettiest city, its full of blue collar folks, and the crime isn't the best.... but have you been around Polk HQ lately? Philly isn't NYC, but I've been through much worse cities (just go over the water to Jersey!!! Camden is the worst hole I've ever mistakenly gone through) Just my 2 cents :)
George Grand
07-23-2006, 11:24 PM
Sorry , the place is a shithole. Sure Camden's a dump. You hear me or anybody else telling you to go downtown Camden for the nightlife or babes? The same goes for Trenton. But at least you don't have people giving you advice to go there for a good time.
I can walk around the departure terminals of any major U.S. airport, and without looking at the departure gate signs, tell you when I've reached the departure gates for Filthy. Noticed I could do that for the first time at Atlanta-Hartsfield in Nov 1982. Ugly people man, no way around it. And large. And dense. That whole "Main Line" blue blood crowd is a laugh too. Ugly old money.

Doro,
My trip is now 14-16, but let's still shoot for the 12th. The reason being, there is a thing brewing off the coast of Africa that they feel is going to go full-blown hurricane, and come up the east coast. If that happens, they're going to launch all the airplanes on the east coast inland to safe havens. Seeing how I have a dedicated trip, they may launch us inland a day or two early so that the storm does not affect our mission to Florida. We'll go around to Florida the back way, from Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, or Rickenbacker in Columbus, Ohio, which are some of the places we take the airplanes so that the storms don't wreck them. I remember you asking me for my cell #, but that's worthless. Most of the time I can't hear it going off in the leg pocket of my flight suit. If I get news that I have to boogie early, I'll get in touch with you, so PM me your cell #. I still have your house number.
If this thing goes off, anybody in the area who wants to come and meet The Man, The Legend (not me, him), is welcome. I'll spring for the Russo's pizzao and foul swill that you drink. That beer shit. What kind of beer should I buy? I don't drink it so I really have no idea what's fashionable and what isn't.

Doro,
Since your in Bensalem do yourself a big favor & drop by Quest For Sound. Stephen Monte is the owner & he's got one hell of a 2-channel store along with being a real down to earth guy. He's got tube gear galore along with a display of speakers that will leave you speechless. I've bought quite a few pieces from Steve. He's right in the heart of Bensalem at 2307 Bristol Pike (rear building) He's having his own show on the 17th with a lot of manufactures showing off their stuff. His web site is guestforsound.com. Maybe you can squeeze in a visit, I know you'll really enjoy Steve.

All this talk about Camden, Philly and Trenton.
Camden is my hometown. Up until about 2 years ago, most of my extended family still lived inside Camden city limits. The only way about 90% of them left was because they died. Needless to say, quite a few holidays meant family trips to Camden. I used to drive an ambulance in there on a regular basis and I've even volunteered at food drives and clothing drives at the Camden Diocese office in Camden. The only time I was ever scared of being there was when we had a flat tire on the ambulance and there was a gang war on the next block over. Wasn't really scared until we figured out that what sounded like big bugs flying past us were actually bullets.
Went to school in Philly for 5 years (Drexel University, 32nd and Chestnut). Most of the trash trucks we maintain at the diesel shop I work at do runs in Philly. I have gone to Philly at some of the oddest hours without issue.
Maybe it's just me but as bad as everyone makes it seem, it's still "home" to me. I actually miss the social disaster that is this area when I have to travel for extended periods. The rest of the world seems too "soft" comparativly.

All the cities in NJ can seem like a train wreck, but have there pockets of hope. Newark has the downtown which is looking pretty good with the recent improvements. Paterson is kind of stagnant, but not a complete trainwreck. Jersey City has had a crapload of money put into the waterfront era (which is a heck of a bright spot)
I cant figure out why Camden cant get jumpstarted though. they've dumped hundreds of millions down there and its only getting worse. There near the need for marshal law (not at the point, but getting too close for comfort). When it seems even money cant solve the problem, thats an issue.
I've done Ambulance runs in Paterson, but not Camden.....thank god. I've been adept at avoiding the gunfire, but I used to be a friggen magnet for beer bottles. A 40 ounce bottle can hit a rig and scare the chit outta ya :D

You could have told him that his picture was being taken & it was ok to smile though!:)
I'm pale? He's freaking Italian! I'm a redneck who works every day in the sun....that's as good as it gets. Thanks for telling me I look fat by the way....and that WAS me smiling.
I would call that photo...Vintage Polkie & New Polkie. I love that picture.
