Good choice Trey, I hope you find the Odyssey gear as good as I have. Give it some break-in time, don't ask me why, but they seem to like constant on power and the sound really does open up the longer they are powered and played.

1 month is a long time when you are listening to altec computer speakers that cost 40 bucks! lol

1 month is a long time when you are listening to altec computer speakers that cost 40 bucks! lolCongradulations, i had the Khartago monoblocks with the red boards and Plitron transformer upgrades and they sounded wonderful. if you decide at a later date to get the monos, klaus will convert your existing Khartago and another new one to monoblock configuration for free. the only thing you have to pay for is a second Khartago.i just got off of the phone with Klaus last night and he put me on the list for the new Candela tube preamplifier with a remote and the Alps Blue velvet volume control, Sonicaps and other nice parts inside .Enjoy! Would be willing to take innard pics?I no longer have the Khartago monos, i sent them back to Klaus with the full purchase price credited towards a pair of mono extremes which i also sent back to Klaus for "special order" SE mods which include Hexfred bridge rectifiers and Nichicon muse es capacitors.these amps weigh 66 lbs each and have a double stack of Plitron toroidal transformers in each monoblock.they are also wired internaly with Groneberg TS premium cable as per my instructions to Klaus. thanks....WCW III

Oh wait, I think I'm missing something here. What speakers are you getting? I know you sold the monitors but don't remember seeing a thread for your next speaker purchase.

I am going to use the DTs for now...

But Im savings slowly - year and a half down the road you should be seeing these pop up on the board...

Its a choice between these 3...

1) Linbrook Sys 2
2) Taylo 7u
3) Freedom F5

All from Tyler Acoustics...

My favorite of the 3, even though its the "lesser" is the Freedom F5...

Im going to be honest with you, I want a big speaker - Id love to have a speaker 10" wide, 16" deep, 48" tall - I want something when you walk into the room and you want to listen because if you dont it'll eat you for lunch.

But I want that with good sound. The 7u is big and it should sound AMAZING. Im undecided though. I got over a year to figure it out though...

Sweet. You're on your way to one hell of a rig. Good luck!

VR3
08-31-2006, 11:13 PM
I think this is the rig I may end up with...within the next 2-3 years...

Speakers - Tyler Acoustics Taylo 7u
Preamp - Odyssey Audio Candela (Remote, HT Bypass)
Amp - Odyssey Khartago
Subwoofer - ACI Titan XL
CDP - ?
DVDP - Cambridge Audio Azur 540D

And 3 more weeks (or so) before I get my amp, THE WAIT SUCKS! These computer speakers royally blow.

What are you thinking of in terms of a CDP? SS or tube? Price range?

VR3
09-01-2006, 12:41 AM
Not sure, thats pretty much LAST on the list...

List kind of looks like this...

Amp > Speakers > Sub > Pre > CDP? or TV?

But 99% sure its going to be SS... tube CDPs seem pointless.

Probally in the 500-700 range (shipped)

Huh?

You should want to get the best sounding CDP within your budget. If that happens to be a tube player, then go for it.

BTW, I've heard a couple of tube players in your budget (hell, I own one) and I've heard SS players in that category (hell, I owned one), and IMO the tube players were generally far superior in SQ than the SS ones.

I do want that...

But the last thing I want is a freakin CDP that needs yearly maintence...

I dont know much about tubes though..

09-01-2006, 04:11 PM
yearly maintenance.. if tubes wore out that quick we wouldnt have tubes being sold from the 50's and 60's still... no upkeep per sey on tube gear.. plug and play if its new production stuff

The tubes in a CD player will last, for all intents and purposes, a lifetime.

I dont know much about tubes though..Tube gear like pre's and CDP's are not complicated. You don't have to bias the tubes like with an amp Trey (once you do it biasing tubes really isn't complicated either). They are a plug in and play deal on the CDP's. Tube rolling can be a pita but only if that is how you look at it. I think it's fun. NOS or new tubes should last about 3000 hours min (someone correct me if I'm wrong here). 3000 / 24 = 125 days. let's say you listen music 4 hours every day = 750. That ain't exactly yearly bro ;) :)

Any suggestions?

Im getting ahead of myself and planning far far into the future, Im now looking at 5-6 years down the road - which is insane, but I am merely just seeing what is out there....

But, Im slowly saving up for it and assuming life goes smoothly - should be a fun journey!

Just to give you an example of where I am at...

Im looking at a path like this...

Amp (Completed) > Speakers > Sub > Preamp > CDP > TV > HT Preamp/Amp > Surrounds > Center

Which is..

Khartago > Taylo 7u > To be Decided (TBD) > Candela > TBD > TBD > TBD > Freedom > Freedom

And the Speakers, Sub and Preamp is in the 2-3 year margin. To throwing in the CDP, TV, HT gear - looking well into 6 years.

But Im in no hurry.

Dennis Gardner

Long term planning works great for everything 2 channel, but be careful planning HT moves since the codec/HD standards seems to be everchanging. You can waste a ton of $$$ just trying to keep up.

I like your timeless choices so far, definately not mainstream gear.

VR3
09-04-2006, 09:26 PM
Yeah...

Im not looking to far into the whole HT thing, and when I do - itll be when I get my own house or something... just because putting that kind of speaker in this room is out of the question...

And I cant stand having the flavor of the month of the masses in my setup... its gotta be somewhat few and far between...

The biggest "mainstream" component may end up being a SVS..

Thanks for the comment, have any recomendations or changes you would do?

Chances are Ill get the preamp before the subwoofer - as the B&K will end up being the weakest of the link other than the CDP...
