LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Bob Dylan says modern recordings sound "atrocious," and even the songs on his new album sounded much better in the studio than on disc.

"I don't know anybody who's made a record that sounds decent in the past twenty years, really," the 65-year-old rocker said in an interview with Rolling Stone magazine.

Dylan, who released eight studio albums in that time, returns with his first recording in five years, "Modern Times," next Tuesday.

Noting the music industry's complaints that illegal downloading means people are getting their music for free, he said, "Well, why not? It ain't worth nothing anyway."



"You listen to these modern records, they're atrocious, they have sound all over them," he added. "There's no definition of nothing, no vocal, no nothing, just like ... static."

Dylan said he does his best to fight technology, but it's a losing battle.

"Even these songs probably sounded ten times better in the studio when we recorded 'em. CDs are small. There's no stature to it."

Aw, I read the thread title and thought someone was agreeing with me :D

While Dylan is probably partly right, considering some of the crap he has put out since, oh, say 1976, when Desire came out, the last album of his I really enjoyed... I don't know how much of his word I can take.

Bob Dylan things todays music sounds like shit. Looking at "Bob hit it on the head" almost makes me look like a fan.
44 years on this planet and I have only cared for a small handful of his stuff.
Not that it matters what I think of his music...what matters is the guy has been in the recording camp for years and his take on the quality of masters making their way to the presses is dead on!

I don't know WTF he's talking about. He's a great song writer, and if he's saying music these days is shallow drivel, I agree -- at least on the FM radio. Screw a good voice, and give me emotion. That's why Dylan was so popular...the son of a bitch had a way with words. Ballad of Hollis Brown? I don't mind his voice, but then again I consider a good voice a mere bonus on any album.

He's wrong about there not being good stuff, though. It's just harder to find unless since all the shit is shoved down your gullet day in and day out. Zombieboy knows where it's at. :)

I think it's been at least five years since I even attempted to navigate the shite-infested waters of FM. What's more, you can't even look to Rolling Stone, SPIN, etc for any head's up regarding what creativity might actually be occuring out there.

Dylan should know this.... I know his beef isn't with the indies who are making it happen. But they're still making good music -- and a lot of it sounds unbelievable. Check out My Morning Jacket's Z for further proof.
This was the product of genius at work in a studio and the recording reflects that.

That song (among many others) is just amazing. I always said that Dylan could say the most with teh least amount of words of anyone I ever heard.

I still would rather have my iPod hooked up to my stereo than trying to keep old lps around, though...
