View Full Version : Perfect albums

Strong Bad

I was listening to the radio on my way to work this morning. A Pink Floyd song (from DSOTM) just went off and the DJ started talking about how that came off of one of several perfect albums. Here are the ones he spoke of (and i agree) (no particular order)

1. Dark Side of the Moon - Pink Floyd
2. Appetite for Destruction - Guns N Roses
3. Led Zeppelin 4
4. Sgt Pepper - Beatles
5. Back in Black - AC/DC

I have some others, in my opinion, that should be added to that list.

1. Brothers in Arms - Dire Straits
2. Moving Pictures - Rush

So, whatta ya guys and gals think? What would you add to the list of Perfect Albums?

5. Back in Black - AC/DC
I just recently added this to my collection and I was disappointed by the SQ. Would have been a nice album otherwise.

The CD I put in the most is the soundtrack from "The Doors".

I can still listen to these albums from start to finish and still want to hear them again and again:

STP - Core
Live - Throwing Copper
Collective Soul - Collective Soul

None is "perfect", but they (and I guess Nevermind) are some of the better 90's albums, IMO. Back in Black is solid (and then some) as well.

I can't belive you are complaining about the SQ of an AC/DC album. There is only one way to play any AC/DC track...and that is LOUD. Everything else is irrelevant.

Yes, I played it loud. It's muddy so all the loudness in the world doesn't help it much. :)

If you had ever been to an AC/DC concert you would realize that is the way it is supposed to sound. There are "mood enhancement substances" that are rumored to help...

As to perfect albums:

The Beatles - Magical Mystery Tour
The Eagles - Hotel California
The Police - Synchronicity

Dave Mason - Alone Together
Dave's 1st post Traffic solo effort and the poor guy never came close to this level again.

The Who - Who's Next
'nuff said...

Spirit - Twelve Dreams of Doctor Sardonicus
Only discussion is which side is greater than the other.

Yes - Close to the Edge
Their high watermark... and (IMO) "Art Rock's" as well...
The remastered release's SQ is very, very good.

David Bowie - Hunky Dory
His release just before the Ziggy breakout, which wasn't too bad either.

On AC/DC's Back in Black.... I got the remastered release a bit ago. Sounds great to me...

When I saw the headline to the post DSOM was the first thing to come to mind. Seargent Pepper's right behind...Fillmore East is a good one as well. Second on the Yes. Fleetwood Mac Rumors.

If you want to hear one of the most musical, perfect, solid albums ever, Widespread Panic's "Everyday" is choice stuff. That will really show off your system and make your ears very happy.
Pearl Jam "Ten" doesn't have a bad song IMO.

Queensryche - Operation Mindcrime

Kiss - Alive (the first one)

Van Halen (Debut)

I would almost say Pink Floyd - The Wall, but something about the way it ends like it was cut off in mid edit or something has just always got on my nerves for some reason, like it was incomplete. But it is still a phenomenal album anyway.

Alex De Grassi Now and Then

I've yet to come across any one person who has not been completely won over by this folk album that boasts songs and rhymes we learned as kids. Combine that with masterful acoustic skill with top-notch recording quality, and you've got a real winner from start to finish.

Stan Getz / Joao Gilberto

This self titled album is legend and helped to spark not only jazz/samba to these shores, but also helped to boost jazz, period. A fantastic album from start to finish... great for late night listening. The Verve master is VERY well done.

Loreena Mc Kennitt The Book of Secrets

This celtic album has been one of my favorites for years. Every track captures the vivid ambience and sense of celtic folk-lore. Loreena explored her roots here and in my opinion, did one hell of a job.

Dead Can Dance Spiritchaser

This sound is a slight departure from the bands norm. This album succeeds with the goal of creating a living, breathing force of instrumentation and soul. Great music with a heavy accent of tribal dance and lore. I spin this late at night, let go of any connections from the concious world around me.

Honorable Mentions;

The Vince Guaraldi Trio - A Charlie Brown Christmas

You either love it or hate it. Every holiday season my mother would put on the classic show. This music has become a staple during Christmas season and the Vince Guaraldi Trio captures it perfectly.

Dan Gibson - Christmas Solitudes (1992)

Good recordings that bring together great harmony between the sounds of nature and classical music. The selections are excellent and take you through various moods. Ever since I was 8 or so years old, this album would play as my mother cooked holiday goodies. I will make sure that no holiday season will go by without it being played many times.

Michael Hedges - Aerial Boundaries

A legendary guitarist that left the world too soon. This album will send you soaring. I feel this album does a great job of capturing the man in his prime. Its a joy to listen to from start to finish.

Oh, and Floyd's "wish you were here" and "dark side of the moon" aren't too bad when high.

Anyhow, back on topic:

Pink floyd, Wish you were here, followed by DSOTM (in my opinion)
NIN, I'd take Pretty hate machine, not so much w/ Downward spiral

NIN, I'd take Pretty hate machine, not so much w/ Downward spiralDitto... and London Calling occurred to me as well.

More solid candidates above, but we seem to be slighting the ladies...

Alanis Morisette - Jagged Little Pill
If not perfect, it comes damn close... Another artist whose first effort may never be approached again by them.

Carol King - Tapestry
Excepting "the hit" track, "I Feel the Earth Move", which made me wretch, it's a great one...

But my top nomination would have to go to:

Joni Mitchell - Blue
Can't think of an effort by man or woman that gets close to the level of emotion JM poured into this one. Just don't listen to it drunk with a flare gun handy.

Often, "Best Of's" shouldn't be included but thought I'd throw out:
Bob Marley- Legend
Al Green- Best of

While many listed above deserve consideration, this thread is quickly becoming a favorite list. A perfect album is one where the songs all fit together and the sounds and "feel" of the album blend from one to another and where there are no holes or filler tracks. A couple above are on my, and many others top albums lists but I wouldn't include on a perfect list. U2's "Joshua Tree" is one. I love this album but there are tracks I ALWAYS skip. Nice to see Dave Mason " Alone Together". I may not include on a perfect list but this is one of my all time favorite lps.

O by Damien Rice. Even if you don't like the music, the SQ will just blow your socks off.

If you were to close your eyes and imagine the sound, you would see a guy singing and playing guitar in the bakground and maybe some other instruments. the rest would be black. That is the only way I can put it, EVERYTHING is discernable.

I agree with a lot of the posts, but I think my favorite album of all time is the Counting Crows - August and Everything After. A great debut album for a virtually unknown band and even though people complain about Adam Duritz's incessant whining, he is a great musician and a phenomenal live performer.

Emmylou Harris' Red Dirt Girl is right up there, too, IMO.

Ah, Carol King's "Tapestry"...... what an album !!!

Black Sabbath's second album .... "Into the Void".

Turn the lights down, play it through......"Planet Caravan" defines the word "melancholy".
When the album gets to the title track, "Into the Void", strap in and crank it up. When the neighbors complain, tell them to go **** themselves, that you're playing it the way God would have you play it.

I enjoy most of the songs on Collective Soul's Hints, Allegations, and Things Left Unsaid, but the sound quality on several of the songs is horrendous. If I remember correctly, part of the reason is that some of the songs were recorded in an actual garage with somewhat primative gear. The record company just used some of the same stuff Ed Roland brought in for demos.

Other than that, I would have to add:

Beck Odelay

I actually logged on and did a search for "Master of Reality" just so that I could correct that mistake. :o

...good call, Tour2ma, "Planet Caravan" was the 3d song on their 2nd album, "Paranoid".

The song right before "Into the Void", "Solitude" is another melancholy masterpiece (On their 3d album, "Master of Reality").

Whew, now I can go to be with a clear conscious.
I guess that's a sign I'm getting old, getting Black Sabbath tracks and albums mixed up. :)

Steely Dan - Aja

I can't believe how well recorded this album is. Its ridiculous. Probably my reference album at the moment.

Aja is a great album in terms of arrangement, performance, and recording. It's even got a beautiful glossy gatefold album jacket with fantastic, high-fashion cover photograph (Hideki Fujii). But it is too perfect (IMNHSO)... that spoils its perfection. I am a big Steely Dan fan, too... and it would probably be my favorite Steely Dan album, if it weren't so... manicured. I think I like their first album (when they were almost, sort of, a rock band) best of all. :-)

Aja: Great jazz album for those (like me) who don't quite "get" or just don't like jazz, but do like rock/pop.

EDIT: oh, I forgot... BTW, which version is your "reference album" at the moment? I have the original ABC, and also the MoFi... unlike many folks, I prefer the latter.

The two I thought of immediately are already listed:

I like almost every single Dylan album that came out before Blonde on Blonde better than I like Blonde on Blonde. I never quite understood why people like this album so much. Freewheelin', The Times They Are A-Changin', Another Side of Bob Dylan, even John Wesley Harding, and much later, Desire, I like better than Blonde on Blonde.

But that's just me :)

For me the perfect album is Porcupine Tree's: In Absentia!

A lot of the ones mentioned were predictible yet correct. Surprised by the AiC Dirt recomendation, although it is a fantastic CD.

Also Opeth's: Blackwater Park is one of the most haunting CD's I have listened to in a very long time. If you can get over cookie monster and listen to Mikael Akerfeldt's true real voice, you would be blown away. Just an absolute amazing CD.

Listened to this last night in its entirety. I'd have to agree.

I"ve seen the Allmans live so many times. They used to come to Great Woods (now the Tweeter Center) 2 or 3 times a summer, and we went every year for at least five years back in my college days. Saw them at least a dozen times, such good times.

The Fillmore concert was simulcast on WNEW-FM. The warm-up band was Mountain. I taped the entire affair, off the air, onto cassette with a Vivitar deck. I had that album before it was an album.

That is so cool. Mountain was in their prime back then as well. While you may not have seen this one, from the many threads you have commented on about your concert experiences I have to say I am VERY impressed at the shows you've seen. The days of the Fillmore concerts were just before my concert goings. Unfortunately, those days are LONG gone....:(

Should also add that the reissue of the cd version expanded the playlist from this show. Includes (among others) one of my other all time favorite 'bros songs "One Way Out".

+1 to Hotel California. I have it on CD and LP.

For you metal fans... Master of Puppets is a great album, but until you listen to the Steve Hoffman DCC re-master, you haven't heard anything yet.

Mad Season - Above
Soundgarden - Superunknown
Alice in Chains - Dirt

Perhaps one of the best, if not the best, albums to come out of the Seattle grunge era was Mad Season's one and only album.
