Seems like the poor PQ on the Samsung is a mystery to engineers at both Sony and Samsung. Sony seems unable to recreate the problem on their gear. And a bunch of engineers from both companies are initially pointing the finger at an always on noise reduction setting for the 'crawlies'.
That the original Sony masters don't show the same artifacting might mean that this is a Samsung problem. I guess we'll know in a few months.
On the plus side, LPCM seems to be the best quality audio these guys have ever heard. Can't wait to hear it myself. :D

This could be part of the problem. I have yet to see NR that was well executed.

Blu-Ray sucks. Buy a REAL dvd player that way you dont have to buy special blu-ray dvd's. Buy a HD DVD

Do Blu-Ray players not play standard DVD's?
If they do, I fail to see how blu-ray dvd's are any more "special" and hd-dvd's.
EDIT: and personally I wouldn't buy either right now.

When you get right down to it it's a 50gig disc vs a 30gig disc... both are plenty big for HD. It's all up to content and codec implementation to use that space wisely.... and none of that really matters in the long run next to marketing.

But I think that Samsung really screwed up on the hardware of their first player.
In any case, no player's perfect right now. They're all basically beta versions with us consumers stuck working through their problems. But it's good to know that superb video (HD-DVD) and audio (Blu-Ray) exists. Shouldn't be too long before we get both in one machine.
BTW, both formats are backwards compatible and will upconvert regular DVDs. Both Blu-ray and HD-DVD disks will not play in a regular player.
