View Full Version : Broken Binding Post

Help! I opened up my amps to tighten the binding posts, and I ended up breaking one of them off! Appearantly the outside portion of the binding post goes through the amp 'wall' via a 'screw' (that I suppose is actually just one piece with the outside unit), and then a nut tightens down from the inside to secure the binding post. Well, I was tightening 'em all down...in fact, I had already tightened down my other three amps...when I noticed that it was really loose on this one. FYI, this is an AV-20. I then noticed that the back of the unit is dented in, as in shipping damage or what not, so I figured something got knocked loose. Anyhoo, I'm tightening and tightening...'cause it's REALLY loose...I mean, I can move the binding post in and out a good 1/4". But there's a good bit of resistance, which I wouldn't expect...and then pop. I sheared the 'screw' part. It's now in two pieces.

I'm attaching pics of it all, including the rear where the damage is.

Now, what in the world do I do at this juncture? I just thought I was lost when it came to understanding audio and buying and setting up stuff...now I'm really lost.

Help!
Michael

This is a perfect time for a binder upgrade. You need chassis mounted binders...and I would suggest Vampire Wire.

Break out the soldering iron and get busy.

That seems like a great idea. Sid just suggested it, too. What if I can't solder? During the summer working for a HVAC repair place I actually brazed twice. But that (at least what I did) required NO finesse.

Go get laid... or sleep at a Holiday Inn Express...

You will know exactly what to do after that.

Ok, I'm actually not so upset this happened, now. I'm *almost* excited about upgrading the binding posts.

Also, I now have just the Wave 8's hooked up, so it's nice to go back to those so I can get a better idea of the difference between them and biamping, and I now am bi-wiring.

So, what're some good options for binding posts? I want something nice. And since I don't imagine binding posts can cost that much, I'm guessing I can get some nice ones. What do y'all like, and where do you like to get them?

Parts express has 68 pages of posts when using "binding post" as a search keyword.

You sure don't have to buy from them, but they offer lot of brands and options at all $$$ levels.

you wont be so excited when you see what "good" binding posts cost :D

it will be worth it though, beings they are broken now anyways :)

I'm with Doro, buy some Vampires. Very reasonably priced and high quality.

F Vampire, Cardas baby - all day all about (in my best Mantis voice).

You can handle it, since I sold them to you, if you want to ship them back here, I'll gladly knock it out for you.

Oh, and RELAX. Tubes are easy.

Cheers,
Russ

Cardas or WBT if you want the best. However, the other brands will work too and for less money.
