My Evolution: Slayer to Nora Jones!

I just watched MTV's Heavy Metal history and was inspired to listen to my old cassette tapes. Wow what a flashback... Slayer, Judas Priest, Van Metallica, Tesla, Kiss, etc. I had a good time spending a few hours listening. The sound quality of these tapes sucked, especially since some were dubbed from records. I have some records, but no record player, plus I don't think my HK 635 has pre-outs for Phono. I don't listen to hard rock very often anymore- now I mostly listen to Van Morrison, Jack Johnson and Nora Jones.

I think all of us have "evolved" into broader musical tastes as the years have passed but I will admit that last night I rocked out to Armored Saint on my satellite radio. Its always fun to "regress" sometimes! :)

I also listen to the hardest and softest stuff out there. I listen to death, black, symphonic and power metal. I also listen to very soft female vocals and classical stuff as well. I can't say I've evolved. Probably expanded.

I admit that I have Slayer albums and Norah Jones in my collection. I wonder what it would sound like to have Norah as lead for Slayer? Probably be pretty good.

I used to listen to hard heavy rock/metal when i was younger in my early teen years.. don't care for it now.. however im very eclectic with music.. I just got 2 nora jones cd's for my birthday couple weeks ago.. I listen to rock, some rap, classical and love jazz .. some times i listen to country even when the mode takes me.. (ie: read, when im drinking) LOL

I listened to slayer, and some other hard shit back in the day and dont care for it so much now.. but its cool to listen to everything

I can't say I've evolved. Probably expanded.Same here. Metal, Industrial, Jazz, Funk, Punk, Alternative, Rock, Hard Rock, etc. - it's all music to me :)

Me too. I love it all...except maybe the really hard metal stuff...it just hurts my ears. I find as I get older that Diana Krall and Norah Jones are in the player a lot more than my Nine Inch Nails.

I Agree. "Expanded" fits better for me as well. "Evolved" has the connotation that one is better than the other.

Im one of the few that am still listening to the same old stuff I was when I was a teenager.

Back then I was all into heavy metal and even the hair metal bands. To this day I still primarily listen to that type of music.

I have a few CDs that are slower and more mellow but Id say 85% of what I listen to is metal.

Ha...just wait and see:pWhat am I waiting for D? I listen to a variety of music but NIN has been there with me since '89 and is still the artist I own the most of. Saw them / him this summer (July 1st) in concert. Wasn't as good as October but still beat the snot out of Bon Jovi @ Soldier Field.

You are maturing Ern Dog! It happens to all of us. I still dig the old rock and metal like I did when I was young. But as you get older the sophistication of jazz, classical and more refined music start to take hold. You begin to notice more intricacy of the instruments and lyrics. Enjoy the ride it's cool. You'll always have the big hair bands and metal rock. There is just so much more to enjoy. Happy listening!

My brother in-law is stuck on old rock, and hair band music.. I told him, you should try some jazz when your just chilling out or by yourself taking it easy.. nah man that stuff makes me go to sleep.. he's 7 years my senior to.. some people never mellow out :D I'm only 33 and love to mellow with some cool, smooth jazz.. and a cold one,. :)

I think it happens to most of us. I used to be into the heavier stuff but have developed a taste for the softer kinds of music. Went from mudvayne to savoy brown in about two years. I guess it also helps that jazz and soft vocals (eg. norah jones) just sound best with my lsi7's. I'd rather listen to a good song that sounds amazing than a bad recording of my favorite band. I've actually started to develop my parent's taste in music...

fwiw I'm just relaxing on my day off to some coltrane right now ;)

I was the bigest metalhead back in highschool and now i still love to listen to the old stuff, slayer, metallica, anthrax etc but i also now listen to alot of jazz and country it all depends on my mood.

No I never listened to Venom but I have heard of them back in the day. For me it was Slayer, Megadeth, Meliah Rage, Suicidal Tendencies, Manowar, Metallica, King Diamond, Overkill, Iron Maiden.

I then found TOOL. They outdo all the rest. Not really metal but they have an energy that I have not found its equal. Deeper. I still have all my old cassette tapes. probably sound like crap.

In high school my favorites included Floyd, Weather Report, Yes, John McLaughlin, ELP, Jeff Beck...
These days 3 out of 4 discs I spin are back to the basics, stipped down blues!
