Speaker phase has to do with whether the driver is moving out or in at any moment in time. In general you want your speakers to be in phase, so they are working together, now some home theater surround speakers are set to fire out of phase on purpose, and when running two subs you may find having then out of phase may help.

SPL is Sound Pressure Level, used to measure the wave amplitude in db at 1 meter using one watt of power to determine a speakers effecieny rating. You will want to balance your speakers so that the same SPL from all of them is heard at the listening position. Say 75db using the test tones on a receiver.

Thats about as lame as i can get!!!!!!!!!!
