just tryin to figure out the cost of an ok 2 channel rig, this system will be in a dorm room, so cant be toooo loud, cant be too big, the only real prob is the budget, i want to spend only like 700 at the most... i know thats a tiny amount to spend on anything decent but i could never justify in my eyes spending more before i get into college life and start living on my own, want to someday turn this into a ht, so speakers and an amp i could later use for biamping fronts for the ht would be great, already have an ok dvd player i use for cd's.

This thread (http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=42836&highlight=budget+system) might help you out a bit.
Vanhool,
Do you have aim or msn? If so, PM me the contact.
$700 actually gives you a bit of head-room to work with...and can get you a pretty decent stereo system to last you through the college years.

Used pair of Monitor 5b's (upgrade the tweets if it's inside the budget)
NAD 3020 Integrated Amplifier - I have seen new for $329 I believe
Used NAD tuna (most colleges have a campus radio station and a number of outlaw radio stations, you'll want a tuna)
Signal Cable speaker cables and IC's
You should be around $700 or less!

For $700 you can do more than 'ok', for sure...my initial feeling was to recommend a vintage receiver (all-in-one solution) but they can be pretty big, plus it won't meet your need for future HT options. Perhaps an integrated amp with a 'power out' option (meaning you can add a bigger amp later and use the integrated as a preamp) would work best for now. Adding a tuner as suggested is a great idea too...so many good options there it is silly. Speakers? Polk, of course...Monitor 5's or so.
