WTB Polk CS1000P

Any particular reason? It's no better a center than the 400(i), and you can certainly add a small sub to your center stage if bass is what you want.

I agree, with today's speakers and subs.. no need for such a large powered center speaker. plenty of other and cheaper models to choose from..

Have you two done back to back comparisons between the CS400 and CS1000p? If you have, great! But don't say something like that unless you really do know.

Consider your sources Surf-Ryder; I think the CS1000p is a great speaker and I understand why you want one. They are hard to find, so good luck! (I had a friend who sold me his.)

I believe Russman has owned both at some point in time. But as always its best to hear both with your own ears, hopefully in a side by side.

No, I just like to make general statements about gear I have no experience with.

With the 'consider your sources' statement, he's just puffing up to endorse the gear he currently owns, which is fairly common - we've all done it at one time or another. Nothing wrong with that, he just needs to realize not everyone on the planet is going to agree with him.

I'll put my dual cs400's and PB2+ against the cs1000p anyday. One in mint condition would be really hard to come by - that's for sure.

To each his own, but ya dont need subs in a center speaker.. those were the days of shock and awe the audio gear and speakers.. "lets make a super center speaker" things are more streamlined and practical now.. IMO

I wish every channel had a subwoofer, or capabilities below 50hz...

But I push that stance more so with surrounds than a center...

I want my center to be crystal clear more than anything...

I have a polk RT5000 system. RT3000 mains, FX1000 surround, and CS1000 center. I traded the CS1000 to another member for a cs400i and some cash. I am currently running dual CS400i centers.
I used the CS1000 for about 18 months. My only real complaint against it was the vibration it caused sitting on top of my rptv.
If my setup had been different, maybe sitting it on a shelf above the tv, that would have solved the problem.
The 1000 is essentially a 400 with 2 subs drivers built in.
I would agree with both arguments in that it is a great unit, and if you aren't running a stand alone sub,
it will ad to your systems overall bass reponse.
But if you are running a stand alone sub, you really don't need it, because you'll want to direct all the heavy action to your sub. anyway.
Dialogue is what a center channel is best at delivering, and most dialogue, unless you're watching alot of Barry White Videos....
just ain't that bass heavy.

I really didn't want you to agree with me, I just didn't want Surf-Ryder to be mislead. As far as "puffing up", I am very realistic about the equipment that I have and I am fully aware of it's limitations. I put together a system that was VERY cost effective and sounds good, too. But if I had the cash, I would abandon Polk and go in a different direction.

Getting back to the first reply to this thread, I realize there are more detractors here for the cs1000p than supporters but I'm happy with mine. I like the center because it matches my RT800's tonally and in freq response. Every center I've tried sounds anemic during action scenes, while the L/R's were holding their own. The cs1000p really anchors the sound on screen and performs more like a L/R speaker, plus it's clear on the upper frequencies as well.

Soundtracks are encoded with full range sound in the main channels, yet the majority of people route the lower frequencies to their subwoofer. I find it distracting and confusing when something big happens from a particular channel but the lower frequecies are happening from somewhere else. Specifically, there are times when there is low information encoded in one of the main channels and the LFE has no, or much less, information. (One perfect example that comes to mind is the jet flyover scene in War of the Worlds.) If you're routing lower frequencies to your sub then you're not getting what was intended on the soundtrack. In fact, today's soundtracks are putting more and more low information in the other channels besides the LFE. But I still see people say, "the center is a dialog channel so there is no need to beef up that channel" or something similiar. Some movies off the top of my head that have low information in the center are The Incredibles and The Lord of the Rings. The cs1000p struts its stuff with these movies.

Keep looking at this thread Surf-Ryder, if it keeps going like this the other guys will have someone talked out of their cs1000p!! But no matter what anyone says, it all comes down to what sounds good to YOU and what YOU like. We've all made good points for both sides, but hopefully you'll find a cs1000p to find out for yourself. I'm hanging on to mine for now, so good luck with finding one!!

The 1000p has a "cool factor" about it. I came here myself years ago hot to own one, and I still may someday, but my twin CS400's more than fill the front stage.

I've owned both the CS400 and CS1000. Both are great but I've got to say that added sub on the CS1000 adds a dimension to vocals that just isn't there on the CS400. I don't have room for a center channel sub so it is my preferred Center speaker of the two. Good luck finding one. It's worth the search.
