So who plays 'first person shooters'? Have you played any of the Quake series *or fps style games*, on what system, and what type of results did you get from using a computer soundcard as the sound source?
There's nothing like a good deathmatch...:supermad:

Why don't you check www.3dai.com ;)
Some of the cleaner "gaming" cards are the Audigy, Santa Cruz, and Game Theater XP. You can go more high end, but for gaming, no use.

COUNTER-STRIKE ! ! ! ! mod for HL is one of my favorite FPSs. I have a Soundblaster Live (OEM) card that came with my Dell. It sounds pretty good, but nothing like PS2 in dts.

Which games for PS2 do real-time encoding of DTS?
lax01
07-05-2002, 09:22 PM
NHL2002, SSX Tricky, and a few others. My PS2 actually died, so I need to get a new one. That is why I went back to PC games. SoF2 (Soldier of Fortune 2) is pretty sweet.
Steve@3dai

Real time? Not just the cut scenes and background music? Because it takes QUITE a bit of horses to encode real time DTS/DD without a noticable latency.

Mine died as well.Ps2 sucks!!I had problems with it ever since I bought it.So I ditched it and got an Xbox.
Xbox is so much better.Cleaner graphics, just about all games in Dolby Digital. The paddles are nicer like the S paddle or the Madcats.

Real time? Not just the cut scenes and background music?
Sure, but most of the games are only in 4.1, well at least SSX Tricky is. It is realtime and I heard the bitrate is somewhere less than half of 768, because of all the processing.
Mine died as well.Ps2 sucks!!
YES IT DOES!
Xbox is so much better.Cleaner graphics, just about all games in Dolby Digital
I heard that only certain games have DD 5.1? I saw that most of the launch games have it, but after that, many of the games were just released in Dolby Surround. Well, anyway, what does the DD sound like? I heard there was little to no low end. Is that true?

Completely false, the sub goes crazy. The dynamic range is scary for a video game.I was suprised.Monster game cables are the way to go.
I haven't seen a game in dolby surround,all digital.
I love my Xbox......I'm gonna beat my PS2 with a hammer, effing thing sucks bad.

You need to buy cables in order to use componet and Digital out right???I'm into the best.

Monster is not the best. They are overpriced ripoffs. Microsoft sells component cables that are probably just as good as the $70 Monster cables. Sorry just my opinion.

lax01, mantis..you guys said your PS2's died. Which way did you have them positioned, horizontally or vertically?
lax01
07-06-2002, 03:07 PM
horizontally. I left my PS2 in standbye for like 3 months and when I went to play it, it just didn't turn on. I called Sony Customer Service and said it would be $120!!!! to fix. The new ones are $200. That is a tough decision.

Mine was also horizonal.Never went verticial.Left mine in standby as well.I owned it for alittle over a year.I was pissed when it died.
I went to game stop and traded all my ps2 games in and got the XboX.
I don't want a new PS2

Yea, I just got the MS cables, they work just dandy for the progressive scan component in and dolby digital (well, got some Acoustic Research optical, cheapest one I could find without being Recoton).
XBox owns PS2. All the better games are DD5.1, 16x9, and progressive scan. I see Unreal and/or Doom 3 coming out for XBox next year.
lax01
07-07-2002, 10:26 PM
Doom 3? Not this year or next year. When is it coming out on PC? Late this year (I don't know)? But I heard that even the strongest video cards right now won't be able to support it. Even the Geforce Ti440 (?). Just what I heard.
So how are they going to port it to XBOX?
Steve@3dai
07-08-2002, 12:18 PM
Well, the beauty of a console is they can completely optimize something just for that platform and not worry about other hardware/software conflicts. So I betcha they can do a fairly decent Doom3 port to the XBox. Plus, they only need to run it at about 640x480 to look good on a TV.
Doom 3 will be out late late this year or next summer.

I have to admit I still own a ps2, I have never had one problem with it, and I love all the games I have. Although I think I will be picking up an X-box in the near future because I want to play Halo.
On the gaming side of things I think the ps2 has a better selection. With GTA3 and GTA Vice City coming out soon those two titles alone is worth the 200 dollars to spend on a unit. GT3 was also good. Plus Medal of Honor: Frontline absolutely rocks. Playing the Omaha beach mission is an awesome experience to behold. A truely great game by EA.
I know there is a growing faction of X-Box owners out there who were dissatisfied with their ps2's. Not trying to sway em', just saying I still love my ps2, and I will probably be buying an x-box in the near future.

Yes I have done it before. Not with a ps2 but with a phone that went bad.
Just go to Walmart (they take back anything), buy a ps2, hookup the new ps2 to your old connections, just replace the old one back in the box.
I know its a shitty thing to do, but when you spend that kind of money it should work.

Do they check it heavily?
I mean, I tried to take mine apart and put it back together again. I did a pretty good job but any non-moron should see that the case has been opened.
Should I give them fake name and address? Just so it can't come back to me?
Also is there a serial # issue?
I know this is incredibly illegal, but spending another $200 a year and half after I bought the original one sounds like complete horses*** to me. They need like a 2-year parts and labor warranty.
Thanks for all the help! :)

Nah...if it is back in the box and looks halfway new I doubt they will say anything at all.
In fact I doubt they will ever take it out of the box. I would be surprised if they did.
I had my AT&T phone for a year and they never noticed. I payed 125 for that thing and it broke. I was freaking furious. Then I said BS Im not buying a new phone. Im buying the same one and returning the broke one.

Did you guys use your real names? And where is the best place togo? Walmart? KMart? Probably not a small store right?
Thanks for all the info guys.
LiquidSound

Wal mart is great. Just keep the reciept and you're good to go. Fake name and address is a must..unless you used a credit card to buy it. If the PS2 itself comes wrapped in plastic inside the box, be sure and wrap the old one with it too..as this will deter as much walmart checking as possible.
good luck.

Ahh....so Dan...you were able to see the light after all :D I remember a few months back, folks were just all up in arms in the PS2 vs. XBOX battle.
I love my XBOX. To be honest, it's the cheapest entertainment system you can find. For those folks who have HDTV, pick up the HDTV adapter for the XBOX and try out a few games in HDTV (widescreen) and come back and report to me if PS2 graphics still ROCK? Use Microsoft's NFL Fever 2003 as the bench marks. It's got DD, HDTV, Widescreen...and the hits and tackles...they make you hurt.
Halo is a great game. Dan, if you don't have it, make sure you pick up a copy. Also, many stores have the "Platinum Hits" section where you can pick up new games on the cheep. Dead or Alive 3 is another good game. I just can't wait for Soul Calibur 2 to come out.

Only problem with ALL XBox games is the fact is their so dang boring....
any game that has to pertain to a story it should and does fail; this is from my adventures with the machine. The fighting games like DOA and the Game Halo and about any sports game are good games. But if it were up to Microsoft to come out with games like Final Fantasy, Mario, Zelda, Rayman, games like that...we would all be screwed!
The XBox does have the best graphics, and best sound quality, it rules in that area. In overall gaming (story plot) it sucks completely. No game have I played can keep me occupied for more than a hour...
Nintendo may not be the best of the crop but it has some of the best games I have played, Mario, Super Smash Brothers, Zelda, Resident Evil - them games have gotta be awesome.
Play Station has final fantasy, and that game is just completely awesome! Hands down!
Remember, gaming isnt about graphics and sound (although that is nice). Gaming is about the game.
IMO of course..

What up with all the PS2 bashing? I love all my systems. I was one of the 500 000 in North America to own a PS2 on launch day. I lined up in front of Future Shop for 4 hours. I use my PS2 a lot and never had a problem with it. I only had to open it up once to clean the lens with compressed air when it was having problems reading some discs. Now it's still working good as new(almost 3 years).
Here's a list of all the FPS's I own from the first game and the systems I owned the games for.
Wolfenstein 3D (PC, Super Nintendo)
Doom (PC, Super Nintendo, Sega 32X))
Doom 2 (PC)
007 Goldeneye (Nintendo 64)
Quake (Nintendo 64, Sega Saturn)
Turok (Nintendo 64)
Quake 3 (Dreamcast)
Time Splitters (PS2)
Unreal Tournament (PS2)
Red Faction (PS2)
Halo (XBOX)
Return to Castle Wolfenstein (XBOX). The XBOX version of RtCF is awesome because you get the original Wolf 3D when you beat the game.
FPS I'm really looking forward to is Doom3 on XBOX. So far Halo is THE best FPS I've ever played.
Sid,
Sorry, I don't fully agree with you. Although old school style games are great, especially when playing against 3 of your friends, story based games can be much better when you just want to chill. Ever get emotionally attatched to characters in a game? RPG games like the Final Fantasy series is better than most Hollywood movies IMO. If you though the FF game on Playstation was good, you gotta try Final Fantasy 3 on Super Nintendo(Took me almost 300 hours to complete. FF3 is my favorite FF game in the series. Zelda on Super Nintendo is also my favorite Zelda game, gonna play the Game Cube version soon. You gotta give those games a chance, you might find one you really enjoy. The best story based game(and graphic) on Xbox is Splinter Cell.
How about adding some of the whackiest games you've played.
#1 Seaman(Sega Dreamcast). This game comes with a mic that attatches to the controller. You start with some Seaman eggs in your aquarium. You have to keep adjusting oxygen levels, light, food, etc. They are fish with a human head and face. Seaman is a mean SOB, if you're not nice to him, he'll talk trash to you and throw his own shit on the TV screen. I took great care of mine and within 3 weeks, I raised him until maturity and set him free. I saw them mate, eat, play and had very interesting conversations with them. The commentary is narrated by Leonard N btw(spock from Star Trek)
#2 Space channel 5 (Sega Dreamcast) You control a sexy diva reporter named Ulala. Some evil Aliens are taking over planets and your only way to save the good guys is by outdancing your alien opponenets. Yes, it's a dancing game. You don't dance like Dance Dance Revolution, but you make your character dance. While your dancing away, you are broadcasted on TV and you must keep your ratings up.
Believe it or not, Michael Jackson made an appearane in the game and he was named Space Michael. The polygon model of him looks real, I don't knonw if that's a good or bad thing. He did the voice acting and performed a lot of high pitched "ooh" while grabbing his crotch and dancing LOL.
Maurice
*edit* I agree that upgrading the cables make a huge differece. My Dreamcast has S-Video. Monster component and Ultralink optical on my XBOX and Acoustic Research S-Video with Ultralink optical for the PS2.

100 watt amp 10" sub [ it was on sale for $100] so needless to say 5.1 and quake you can make out what direction to missles
are coming from and hear folks from behind.
And now to add in my perspective.
Xbox, Gamecube, any other cube... it all has its purpose. A cheap solution for a B-day or Christmas gift.... Good enough to entertain kids... etc..
As far as performance is concerned.... home PC stations .. "all-day". It may cost an arm and a leg, but damn those games look so much better, have so much deph.
These consoles are catching up though..

Damn Sean! I'd never give someone a console for their b-day:D. I'd spend $100max on the gift:).
I'm more of a console guy. Both have their followers. People who like PC are more into strategy, FPS and online gaming. Consoles are better for arcade style games and RPG's. Consoles also rules when it comes to fighting and racing games.
The XBOX does look weak when comparing the specs to a high end gaming PC but let's not forget that consoles are designed specifically for gaming. The resolution is also lower so that saves a lot of processing power. But there are more and more high definition games coming out on XBOX and Game Cube. PS2 has the lowest resolution.
XBOX is very powerful. You need a kick ass PC to run Doom 3. ID Software mentioned that XBOX is the only console that could handle Doom 3. Release date for the XBOX and PC is scheduled to hit the market before the end of the year. I can't wait! OK, I think I'll stop now and play some Dead or Alive Xtreme Beach Volley Ball:D.

Well think about it this way....the PC games you buy today are worthless (at least in my opinion) after a few years anyway. You spend the same amount of money for XBOX/PC games (unless you're some sort of PC warez freak). The deals on XBOX are real sweat. (Console, Extra Controller, (2 free games in the XBOX box) + 1 additional game for like $200) Shit I bought my Xbox back in Feb 2002 and paid like $500 bux for an XBOX, extra controller and 2 games!

Anthony, Yeah I spent the money on the game but I love it. The game is quite challenging and keeping your friendship with the other players and partners is fun. After a while you'll know what each girl likes/dislike so you can buy a nice gift for them. Oh yeah, it's also the sexiest game!
I will buy Soul Calibur 2 but I'm going to wait for a used copy. I have the first Soul Calibur on Dreamcast and it's so similar to SC 2 that I don't want to spend the extra cash. My brother picked it up for his Game Cube.
Sid,
It's going to be a while before you see XBOX 2. Even if they're not compatible, there's plenty of great games out there already and by the time XBOX2 comes out there will be even more. You should look around and find some video games dealers (not chain stores or EB). In these stores you will find used games cheap for just about every video game systems. They usually sell new realeases a little cheaper than EB. Last week I went to my dealer and picked up four Dreamcast games. Dreamcast died a few years ago and the games are very cheap.
If you do get XBOX, you HAVE to pick up Halo. Don't forget the High Def pack so you can get component or S-video and DD using an optical cable.
I'm sure they will do a price drop around x-mas because it's selling so well and there's some tough competition with Sony.
