I received an email from a local newspaper that I sent the fire photo to, but they never used it.

See it here:

They thanked me for the photo and again, didn't use it but would put me on a list of freelancers for possible future needs.

They contacted me today to ask if i would do an event at a local mall and get some shots for the paper. Not sure of the pay, but it won't be much. i'm not worried about the pay really, just the coolness factor of getting my photos in a newspaper with my name under them.

Stay tuned...

Let me know the date and location, and I'll commit a crime there and your camera will just happen to catch exclusive photos. ;)

Hey do it... it may lead to something else later down the road. I thought your fire picture was excellent. They are crazy for not using it.

you'll get assigments at the last minute sometimes. I did some stringer photographer work while in college for the Associated Press. People tend to give you room when you look "official". Although we were not issued credentials, my gear labeled me a photographer. Depending on the assigment, you may get front row seats for some pretty cool activities. On the other hand, you could be called to capture political figures and the associated posturing. When that happens, it's fun to capture the dumb things they do or non-flattering facial expressions! It can be fun, enjoy.

Looks like they are going to use me for this event. It won't make me rich, but again, the coolness factor is what i'm after. I do shutter the thought though of having hundreds of people in a mall find out i'm shooting for a newspaper and crowding the hell out me to get in a photo.

The Editor said he really liked the photography on my website and hopes things go well this weekend.

APC, how did you get in with the Associated Press as a freelancer?

My Nikon D200, SB-800 flash and 28-70mm 2.8 lens mounted on my flash bracket is pretty sick looking!

cool. have fun with it.. and if you have to drop kick someone in the mall. you have my permission. LOL

enjoy.

Oh yeah.. i don't think you'll have to worry about mall rats crowding in on you.. if you were a TV photographer (like moi) then you'd have to fight them off with a big ol stick. :p

Just got an email from the editor of the paper. They are using 3 of my photos for this Thursday's edition (it's a weekly paper).

How cool is that!

I hope you enjoy taking photos because you have a skill that will last a lifetime.

Be sure to raid a news rack and get enough copies for your family, future family, and future jobs.

You will probably 'coincidentally' get pics of Spider Man.

JD,

Sorry for late response. I've been out of town for the last week. I got on with the AP via some journalism classes I was taking time and the instructor recommended a couple of us. You can most likely contact them yourself...at the time they were always looking for extras.
